Insurance Slips and Police Checks

you can bet that if you're involved in an incident with your Dad's car but are not listed on the policy, that your insurer is going to raise a stink about it by denying parts of your claim and red flagging both you and your Dad for fraud (meaning VERY expensive and inaccessible insurance for a long time).

In the winters, I go skiing / snowboarding and usually horrible road conditions (lots of snow etc) so instead of taking the crappy civic, I take the jeep because of the 4x4 and holds all of us and the equipment. This is maybe 2 times a month. (Jan, Feb, March) Am I supposed to be under the policy? - I cant justify paying the occasional driver insurance for driving it maybe 6 times in a year.

As Viffer had said, police probably doesn't care. It's if (lets hope not) you get into an accident that becomes the pain in the ***.

I don't think I would be able to justify that either.

If you are insured as the principal driver of the Civic, you don't have to worry about being listed as an occassional driver for the Jeep.

very true, that software if coming in a few months.
they can also charge you with no insurance for upto 3 years after the fact, so even if its a sunday morning, they can call monday morning and get the scoop.

The OPP already has this technology, and they have had it for well over a year.
I was driving to college in my accord and i happen to have a suspended license which tipped off the officer when he ran the plates. after he pulled me over, he was able to run the info on my car even though i did not have my slip with me.

They can run your VIN, last name and first name, driver's license info, etc. against every insurance company (or at least most)

The are connected to the insurance company databases through a special back door site from their laptops in the cruisers. They are also equipped to print (no longer hand write) tickets from their in car printers (similar to the department of motor vehicles when they print your vehicle registration)

The local police do not have access to this as of yet (at least i do not think they do), but like mentioned by others they can always call should they suspect something. Most insurance companies also have a 1-800 number that is open 24/7. No policy adjustments can be made, but claims and policy checks can be done.

Eventually every police agency will have access to this database, and its a shame because insurance companies are getting away with crime by charging such ridiculous rates, and people should be getting upset at the government for allowing this to happen.

I have worked for government of Ontario, and it makes me sad the things they are allowed to get away with.

Anyway, if anyone knows where there is a store to get those "novelty" insurance papers, not the slips, but the paper the insurance information is written on (with the white Ontario logo) please PM me. I'm working on a "project" :)

I reiterate -- it's not the police you should be worried about . . . it's having your claim denied and your names red flagged.
Bingo! Very important words right here.

On a side note, when I lived with my girlfriend, we had separate insurance policies and separate vehicles. Because of that, I did not have to put her on my insurance policy (although my insurance company did know she existed).
