Insurance for a new young rider

Hi everybody! I'm new to the motorcycle community and hope you guys would be able to help me with my problem. I'm a 17 y/o and turning 18 in mid april and i currently have a M1 (obtained at April 3, 2013 if that makes a difference) and a 2006 EX Kawasaki 650R and I'm trying to find insurance for it but the quotes I've received so far from online quotes are 6k+ which is ridiculous because that costs more then what I paid for the motorcycle! Any advice/tips or recommendations for places to call for cheaper insurance would be greatly appreciated. And how much of a difference would insurance be if I waited for my M2 to get my insurance instead of getting it with a M1?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers

That might be your best quote for a bike that size. In all honesty your are better off getting a 250 or 125 and with one of those you are probably looking at about $3,000/year for insurance (And remember you can't cancel it for the winter and get half your money back if you try to go that route.

I got my M1 2 weeks ago after getting myself a 250 Ninja. With Statefarm I pay only $70/mth and that's without my courses as well. Due to your age maybe you'll pay a bit more. Try them for your 650 too maybe they'll have a better price for you.

He won't qualify for SF as he hasn't had his G for 5 years, also it seems you are over 25 which is there huge discount for riders (Or you have a car insured with) Hopefully you haven't bought that bike already without checking insurance prices first...........

Would it make a difference if I had my M2?

I kinda bought the bike already I was in a rush to get it and start riding... Didn't really think that through.

Not really, You would probably need a year experience before you would be in the $3000ish/year range at your age on that bike. I am not sure who would even give you a quote cheaper than $6000....... Hopefully someone with a sport touring bike at your age can chime in. Good luck, If I were you I would sell the bike, Take the loss and go after a 125 or 250 for your first couple of years.

When you say I need a year experience does it mean that I actually have to be riding the bike or just have a M2 for a year? and thanks for the quick replies.

Just 1 year from when you got your M1 (Assuming you get your M2 without letting your M1 expire) You don't need to be riding or have insurance.

I'm 18 and i got my M1 on March 26, 2013. I'm doing a MFS course in late May to obtain my M2 then go out buy a bike and ride. I ran an insurance quote on a 2010 kawasaki 250r (I would get a 250 ninja when i go bike shopping) and so far the best i've been able to get is with Desjardins for $3,021/yr. However i got a speeding ticket and one suspension because of that speeding ticket... So who knows how much the changed my rates. I got advice from a friend to try a company called "Personal insurance" i'm going to run a quote tomorrow on a 2010 250r to see what i get for a rate. If you want to call them for your bike there number is: 1-800-476-8737 good luck to ya man but my advice would be to sell your bike take the loss and get a 250. Stay away from the 125cc bikes, you'll be bored within a week.

Lol. Based on experience from having your M1 for 13 days right?

As for insurance, just call anyone and everyone to try and get an affordable rate. The thing is that being young and recently licensed, you'll probably be looking at $4000+ on a 650 cc bike.

I'm 21, full G (g1 over 5 years ago), just got the m1 and taking the safety course in like a week.
No tickets or collisions in my life, and my cheapest quote on liability-only for a 250cc cruiser was a bit over $4000!

This seems crazy, the bike isn't even worth that much.

How are you younger guys with tickets getting lower than that? I even tried using the more rural address I'll be living at during the summer, and I've called at least 4 places. One place, my insurance would drop by about half in a year.

I really wish I had got the m1 years ago, but if you're not insured you're probably not riding, and the time elapsed between safety course and riding will be longer, so the drop doesn't make much sense to me.

Impossibly.. What company is this under? Also you should wait will M2 for cheaper quote.

Are you asking about the drop?

When I called ridersplus, my quote was like $4100 and if I had my license for a year it would be like $2300 or something like that.

I was also told that the m2 doesn't change the quote(at least for that company) since they assume you're gonna get the m2.

Call the personal or des jardin. Quote will be around $1000.

How do you know this? Have you been in my position(age/recent licencee) recently?

Desjardin wouldnt quote me when I called them earlier, since I havent completed the safety course yet. I told them to ballpark it, assuming I had, told me that wasn't possible. Guess I could call again sometime and tell them I have completed it, or just call in 2 weeks when I really have completed it.

I had a 89 400cc (standard bike), that was last year when i was 18y/o. $1800 liability only. So being a 250 cruiser it should be under $1000 easily.
My quote for a ninja 250 was 1300 Liability.

Well, that's encouraging.

Did you have any other vehicles insured, and were you insured as a primary? (I'd be a primary with no car)
Was that when you were less than one year since getting your m1?
