One of the comments... people are upset you get individuals who cut back down the merge ramp and sneak in front. Ok that's fine and not cool, but what this guy suggests just makes congestion worse. You merge at the end like a ZIPPER.... not the earliest, because you know others who are doing it right will merge later. If you merge earlier, you are making it SLOWER for people in the "slow" lane. Anyhoo here is the quote:

Actually I agree with him. If you merge prior to the lane running out, then traffic keeps moving at whatever speed. If you force your way in, at the end of the merge lane, then it frequently results in STOPPED traffic, or pushing people into another, faster moving lane which, in turn, slows it down. I can video it for you on Monday, if you like, so that you can see what I mean.

Those long merge lanes like many of our roads, were designed long before today's exponential increase of traffic. They were designed for traffic moving at a good pace, maybe at least 60 kph (I'm guessing) not for traffic moving at a crawl.

If traffic was moving at a good pace, then using the merge lanes to pass would be far less attractive. If people weren't using the merge lanes to pass, then the traffic would be moving at a good pace.

I blame E-Bikes. They cause a slippery slope mentality for scooters, which then causes one for motorcycles. I see this all the time too, much more after Ebikes came into the picture though.

Then later on, I witnessed what seems to becoming a new norm for riders this year. While moving slowly along Queen's Quay another rider blew past everyone using the bicycle lane. I never used to see this until this year where I have now seen it happen a number of times. I don't mean just riding along the bicycle lane for a few metres to get to an intersection to make a turn, just driving along it, period.

The degree of selfish behaviour on the roads these days is insane.

If everyone is almost stopped, it works perfectly if they go close to the end..... it actually keeps moving things a bit faster. I'm not talking about the dolts that come barreling down at mach 10 in the merge lane then stop and try to move in.

I did say like a Zipper.... so both lanes are going the same speedish... which is usually very slow.

Now if you don't go to the end, someone else will and that's when you get a much slower progress on the live highway lane. Because now instead of it being 1:1 it is like 2 or 3 car for every 1 in the live lane.... so the live lane slows down A LOT. That's why the truck drivers will often block that lane.... keep things flowing appropriately.

If they do it when traffic is almost stopped, then it is completely stopped.

If both lanes are going very slow then it is already a cluster **** so who cares?

If the right lane is moving at 30-40kph and you get mergers coming down the merge lane at 70-80kph to the very end then slowing down and forcing there way into the right lane where there is no gap available.. often passing by several gaps more than big enough for them to merge into without forcing another driver to fall back.. capital douchebaggery.

I'm not disagreeing with you guys.... all I am saying is don't tuck in and have a situation where others are going to keep passing you when you merge, because then it slows things down for the live lane even more. The way I do it is when there is a gap I stick my signal on and match the speed of the live lane and merge in kinda slowly (while traveling at the speed of the live lane) which means I don't slow down the live lane any more and by the time I'm done merging there isn't a place for anyone else to attempt a last instant merge.

When I am driving regardless of what is going on, one of the key things I try to do is facilitate traffic flow.

Entering the DVP south from the blood Bayview ramps, car in front of me, slow lane empty however there was a lady on the center lane that for some reason decides to move into the slow lane cutting the car in front of me whom almost ran out of merging lane and had to brake hard. There was no ****ing reason for that lady to move into the slow lane and cut our entry, it is basically people driving without an ounce of awareness for others, they see the road ahead and the dash board and that is all they care about. Just like they go about their lives, only caring about themselves.... I ****ing hate most people

This is common in the GTA and I have not seen it anywhere else. In fact people will move to the center lane if possible to allow mergers to get in more easily. I don't know what the problem is with people around here...
