Going to the race this year just starting to map out route
windsor way is aprox 8 hrs and looks pretty straight foward. buffalo way 9 ish hours
and looks like more fun?
Has anyone done either route? I am planning on bombing it on one day but also maybe
overnight in windsor?
thanks

We always cross at Windsor - it sure doesn't feel shorter! But yes - the ride will be quite boring unless you back road it. Or, once you hit Indiana you can doff your lid and do 80 mph down the interstate with your g/f on the back - that'll make for an exciting ride no?! Still makes me queasy when I see this. Anyway, we go by cage or fly now - doesn't feel like I'm missing anything by not riding there.

Michigan is a no helmet state now, they just adopted this highly intelligent movement last summer I believe!

Thinking about driving down with my girl, any worthy stops along the way?
I wouldn't mind a road trip with MotoGP being the final destination.

Not really, and to be honest, Indianapolis sucks too. I hope you like MotoGp as much as I do. :)

You could stop at the SR71 museum in Kalamazoo, MI. Maybe do some outlet shopping.

I'm also looking to go (first time) any helpful hints from others that have been before? Camping at the track, camping outside the track, hotel, motel, best seats/section etc....

I will most likely be taking the cage as i've heard the ride does suck and 8hrs will be long for a sport bike.

Unless you're fond of droning on the interstate for hours on end I'd take the car. Last year we left on Thursday after work and made it as far as Fort Wayne IN before calling it a day. We left Fort Wayne early Friday and made it to the track in time for the opening practice sessions. The venue is big enough to hold half a million people for the 500 and NASCAR races but seems empty for MotoGP. Parking and access to the track are easy. The worst traffic you'll run into is leaving Sunday after the MotoGP race. Just hang around for the AMA race and let the crowd disperse. Although we didn't do it, people were camping in the grass parking lot across the street from the track. If you go be sure to head to the Indiana State Fair for the Indy Mile dirt track race on Saturday night. It's middle America at it's best. Lot's of MotoGP riders are there every year to watch the racing.

Indiana during MotoGP is great! Head downtown and make sure you take a cab. We partied with a couple of the teams a couple of years back. Everyone is bike focused and in a party mood. And if you like Blues make sure you hit the Slippery Noodle <--- not making the name up or making sexual innuendo ;)

Agree with earlier post to check out the flat track races.... Very exciting and walking around the pits you may spot some GP riders.

Downtown at night on Meridian is a must to check out bikes.

As for food St Elmo's is a must :)

Alright, I will give you that one... We went downtown on Friday night and did have a pretty good time last year... but outside of that, it's like a big Port Huron almost. :)

We went to the Flat Track races last year also... it was pretty fun, I was the member of the group that got everyone to go.

I don't think anybody wants to do it again... Mostly because it was literally impossible to get out of there. We didn't drive, we took a cab thinking we were going to be able to pound beers. Negative, there is no drinking at the Flat Track races.

How the h e double hockey sticks am I supposed to drink at IMS all day and then go to the hotel to take a quick shower and pound a couple Caesars and a red bull, and then go the Flat tracks without the full expectation that I'm going to be at a total redneck racing event and drinking is going to be the primary focus?!?!

We were totally gutted when we got there. That may sound ridiculous but after cabbing it all the way across the city just so we could drink beer it was a bit of a let down. If you think that was bad, you should have seen the literal hour and 45 minutes it took us to get out of there in a cab afterwards. Busses shut down at like 9:30pm in Indianapolis. This is a major, major problem. We thought we were never going to get home. Never doing it again. :)

Going to go to Indy again... Going to give Texas a shot next year as well... but I won't be going to the Flat Track race again.

Went a couple of yrs ago. We drove in the car & slabbed the whole way. Stayed at the Clarion @ 2930 Waterfront Parkway West Drive. It was "OK", not as nice as I thought/pictures. It was a run down enough I wouldn't stay there again. 3 miles to the track.

FYI you cannot buy beer/liquor in stores in Indiana on Sunday (except in bars & restaurants) so plan accordingly.
Large Fosters for $5 was the best deal @ the track. You can bring in your own (see track website for info). Beer store across the road at the SW corner of track. Avoid the coffee from some of the vendors, it was the freeze dried stuff & so old & compressed it wouldn't even dissolve in hot water.

We sat in the grandstands and could see the exit of turn 1. Turns 2, 3, 4 & the entrance to 5. There was a screen across the way to see the rest. Great seats, no shade or cover FYI. For practice & qualifying we went to every spot you could think of to watch.

We just went to Austin to see the races there and I like the track & views better there (turn 15) but they have some growing pains to get over still. Indy was fun, enjoy.

Buffalo is not any more fun in any way. Its a whole lot busier going across.

I'd recommend 401 to windsor, 75 south, 80 weast to 69 south. Or if you wanna take some time off the highway then from 75 south take 24 west instead of 80 to 69.
80 is a toll road but its smooth with not a whole lot of traffic, not very expensive as well.

I wouldn't take 94 to 69, 94 is busy and the road conditions are brutal. Same with 69 from sarnia, concrete roads that are brutal and that part of michigan is sketchy as hell.

Your riding down or taking the car? Im thinking of riding down if the weather is decent...

thanks for all the experiences and the tips. Wanting to ride down to get the whole motogp feel but I think that involves no feel in my butt by the end. Gonna try and do on a budget just to lower my expectations. Booked the hotel for $44 night and will fuel my bike and body with cheap american gas and beer.

For the people that have gone to either or both.
Which would be more exciting/road trip worthy?

Indianapolis or California (Laguna Seca)?

I would Imagine that California would be a better destination, though it's further and a longer drive but I'm sure it would be a better destination with many things to see along the way...

Thoughts?

California no doubt, but do you have 4 days to ride to cali and 4 to get back?
Also the first 2,000km to california are just as depressing as indianapolis
