Increasing speed limit on Ontario highways

I think that 120 should be a max, majority of the people go at that speed anyways. A good chunk more than that. Plus I didn't realize that 112km/hr was the limit in the 70's. Why did we regress when we probably have better car/bike technology.

What do you guys think of this compromise. I think Germany has something similar where the left lane is unlimited speed, but middle lane is like 120 and right is 100.

We could have 120km/hr on the left, 110 in the middle lane, and 100 on the right most lane.

Left lane will is suppose to be the passing lane anyways, so higher speed makes sense. The right lane will allow traffic to merge, considering I have seen people infront of me try to merge at 70 making a difficult situation for people behind.

People in this city/province can barely drive when there's a single 100kph speed limit on 3 lanes...just imagine the chaos when 3 different speed limits are enforced! LoL

It'll never happen...and the reason for the 112kph to 100kph speed limit reduction was the gas crisis in the 70's. I would love a 120kph MAX speed limit and a 95/100kph MIN speed limit but unfortunately I don't see this happening...not in my lifetime anyway (and I'm 32!)

Looked through some stats from the MTO pdf linked below.

If we assume everything overtime has stayed constant (i.e. road conditions, average driving speeds), then the two things that would attribute to lower collusions, injuries and fatalities, would be improvement in vehicle technology and Ontario’s graduated licensing. Not sure which one helped more. But overall that is a significant decrease in collusions in absolute numbers, while remember the population has increased overall.

I like OP idea, but I think that would not be an easy to implement with so many people opposed to change. A good start would be to enact a rule to vacate the left lane if there is a faster moving vehicle approaching behind you. As common in most of European highways.

I like the idea of min and max limit (in keeping with the flow of traffic of course), and would add that slower merging traffic (say people merging below 70km/hr) be ticketed.

I understand that speeding tickets are a revenue source for the gov, which would make them hesitant to increase the limits. I would be ok if the limits remained unchanged, as long as speeding tickets up to 120 did not impact your insurance and you did not receive demerit points. Might be more of an easier solution to implement.

At the least, I would like the gov to look at some studies on speeds, instead of flat out saying no.

I don't think there's a law for that, it's just common sense and courtesy.
Doesn't happen here, for the same reason that filtering is not allowed.

There is a law for it in the auto-bahn.

One of the reasons I prefer touring stateside, trucks and motorists tend to stay to the right... for the most part.

You know what's crazy? As soon as you get on to any two lane highway that's far from the GTA, people all of a sudden know how to drive.

^^^^+1
with the way people drive around here the max should be 80
imo

I agree!

In Australia there are signs saying not keeping to the left (they driver on the left there) will incur fines. Which they ENFORCE.
