Importing a Motorcycle from US to Canada (transaction dilemma)

1. A bill of sale (no problem, the seller can just write one up)
2. A signed certificate of title (equivalent to our ownership papers) from the seller

The dilemma is that the seller is not willing to sign the ownership papers and scan me a copy (with my info on it - basically transferring ownership) without the cash in hand, and I'm not willing to hand over the cash without any collateral. So in a nutshell, unless I can get a hold of that signed certificate of title, I can't bring the bike across the border because all the other paperwork won't get processed through customs.

Seller do not want to fax the title and bill of sale unless I pay him first (I see his point, for him Canada may as well be Nigeria and he doesn't trust me). I don't want to pay him unless I see the bike first.

I saved about $1500-$2000 and I really wanted to experience this whole importing thing. It went smooth like butter. Will be doing this when I buy a car.

You have to check prices, but some new cars are MUCH less expensive in the US for no good reason. One Toyota model, made in Ontario, is cheaper in Hawaii than Ontario. Mercedes differs by as much as 14 grand on some models and options.

The reason for this is simple: people in the GTA are willing to overpay, and in luxury cars, most rent anyway. The feds and Ontario have been complaining about this for years, so they actually setup the RIV to help people import.
The auto companies countered by telling dealers to refuse to sell to Canadians (which isn't legal). Some sports car dealers will not service US-sourced cars.
 
The process is really easy. You're making it more complex.
The transport company needs the info because they need to supply it to the US boarder ahead of time to the paperwork is done to export the bike.
If the bike is being imported as parts (for track or racing and not to be titled) then you can even skip this and bring it straight thru. if the bike is being imported to be licensed then you need to have this done ahead of time. The paperwork does not have to be signed or have your info on it. BUT it will need to be signed when the bike is brought across. The ownership needs to be sent (I think its 48hrs)prior to the bike being exported. They check for liens and to see if its stolen. When the bike is brought across the agents want a color copy. It will have to be a copy of the signed and filled out ownership. Copy stays with the US agents and the original is stamped for export and given to you (or the broker).
So..just ask the seller to scan in both sides of the ownership and send them to you.
When you've finished with the payment then get the signed copy scanned and sent to you (pass it along to the transport company). if they need it before then ask the seller to make a color copy to give to the driver. Done.
Other option is drive to buffalo and buy the bike, put it in storage and then get the broker to get it from there.
Even better option is spend 10 min reading RIV site and bring the bike across. The only real hassle is waiting the 48 hrs between sending them the paperwork and bringing the bike across. I've brought bikes, cars and RV's across with no issues. you'll save tons.
 
OP, seriosly just bring the bike yourself. There's a good thread on here (like 56 pages long) on how to do everything. I read it and was completely confident to bring motorcycle over.
 
[I saved $2000...same bike as mine but higher odometer at GP bikes was $7000 + fees and tax @ 14%, I paid $5000, $500 to ship from texas, and taxes.
Bike had never seen winter or any other crap we have here, was detailed prior to shipping.

I often debate buying another one or two and paying the $500 to ship them both at the same time, selling them once I get them here.

my shipper, Allan, 416 456 6905, is from Mississauga. Dropped the bike right to my front door! Great service.

only issues I had were on this side.

Getting it to crappy tire as I needed that done before I could plate it! Drove it there with a friend tailgating me in a truck!

In and out in five minutes...
