Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

Hey guys,

Just brought back my new bike from the US. I had my doubts as the dealership kept reassuring me that he'll handle all the paperwork and have everything ready for me for the border. They told me to only cross at the Peace Bridge.

No 72 hour notice ahead of time and I did it today (Saturday). 20 minutes later and I was already on the road for home.

It sounds like you missed the US customs exporting part and only did the Canadian customs importing part. Exporting goes through Lewiston on weekdays only. It might not be a problem really, US customs stamped "US Vehicle Export" on the previous owner's ownership but I don't think either Canadian customs, RIV, or the licensing office or insurance company actually look for the stamp.

Doesn't that mean his bike is still not properly imported? what are the repercussion if he is caught with an improperly imported vehicle?

His bike is properly imported, but not properly exported. Hard to imagine that if US Customs will ever figure that he took his bike over the border, but he may get caught if he ever rides this bike back to the States.

I have a quick question about the export. So i know its not rocket science but if i go buy the bike and he said there are no liens on the bike or hes not financing it is that all the us customs need?
i cant check for that ahead of time right?

You can check if the bike has a lien here, provided that you have the VIN#. I believe this is only for New York though, so anything in the states of NY works.

your awesome! Thanks!

So i checked the bike im thinking about buying and it has a lien. I contacted the seller and he was obviously aware of it and said he will have a letter from the bank stating it has been paid the day i get there.
Thats all i need for the border right?

- Bill of sale (try may ask for it)
- Certificate of title
- Lien release letter from bank
- Confirmation of VIN emailed to buffalovinnyoffice
- receipt of withdrawal from bank (they asked me for this - guess it's to confirm the real pricing of bike so you don't lie? - If applicable)
- Recall clearance letter
- RIV fee
- 5% GST

I think that would be all for both the Canadian and US sides as well as RIV

Not try, they WILL ask for the bill of sale, you must have it, signed, dated, and with bike info on it. They didn't ask me for any withdrawal receipts, although I had a copy of receipt, but asked me 'why is your bike so cheap?'. Like that's why I went to the States to get it, d'oh! RIV fee is paid after you imported your bike because they will need your Form 1 number.

i just faxed in my documents toi the blue water bridge but found out both fax numbers were for the us side. is there a fax for the Canadian side. i cant seem to find it. my results keep getting the us side

It's the US side that wants the documentation 72 hours prior to you crossing the border with the vehicle, and the US side that you fax or email the documentation scans to. US officials check for stolen vehicles etc in that time. If no irregularities show up, then the US border officials will stamp your vehicle registration with an export approval stamp.

Canadian Customs officials do not need anything in advance. Just show up with your vehicle and documents, and get in line. Canadian Customs officials will usually look for that US export approval stamp before processing your vehicle import. If you don't have it, they will usually refuse admission to the vehicle.

You don't need to fax anything to Canadian side. You need to send an e-mail with bike info to RIV.

i think i'm leaving on Saturday afternoon in a rented astrovan to pick up the bike. near south bend in Indiana.

Have you checked if your crossing import/export offices are open on the weekend or are you coming back on Monday?

Hopefully vehicle exports can be done 24/7. If you haven't left yet, I'd call and check, to be safe.

I thought i read blue water bridge was open 24/7.. did i read i incorrectly?

You thought? You always have to call. Check on RIV site for the phone number.

For Port Huron, this is what I got from RIV site:
CBP recommends that you contact the port of crossing directly to determine exact documentation requirements, procedures for submitting documentation and hours of operation:
