Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

If you're going through buffalo, you can just email to them and they will give you a confirmation email with the steps that you need.

I forget the email, but it was here somewhere on post 450 or something.

Awesome! Even better! Now just need a signed over ownership and the bill of sale from the owner. Did the title search just in case for liens, did the recall clearance on Honda website, got the cyclevin report (again, just in case). Got a boatload of photographs from the seller, which really helped. Now just need to figure out how to give him a deposit. Paypal is probably the only option?

I keep reading some conflicting information. Do I need a copy of SIGNED OVER ownership or just a copy of the ownership for the US border?

I brought the original but honestly can't recall if there was a spot to have it signed over or not. Either way it's long gone, I think I gave it up to the MTO when I got my new ownership.

The ownership has to be faxed to the US Customs 72 hours prior to the vehicle crossing the border. I need to know if the ownership that gets faxed needs to be signed over at that point already.

if ur going thru buffalo u dont need to fax ANYTHING all u need is to send them an email with the vin 72 hours prior no ownership is required

This is even more conflicting than the other posts. So I don't need to scan/e-mail the signed ownership and the bill of sale to the US customs??

Wow, so at the end of the day, it all boils down to three documents.

- I will e-mail bill of sale, VIN number and the copy of the title to the US Customs at Queenstown/Lewiston bridge tomorrow - buffalovinnyoffice@dhs.gov . They should confirm the receipt within 72 hours.
- I will e-mail the copy of the Honda recall results check to RIV Canada - recall@support.riv.ca . They should confirm the receipt within 24 hours.

I think I didn't miss anything. Should do all this paperwork thing tomorrow. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly as I already paid the deposit on the bike :)

I brought my bike over in january, and that is all that was required, and then u need all the paperwork when crossing the border with the bike

it was a new bike, maybe thats why they didnt need anything. Also didnt need to send anything to the recall people. I brought over a Kawi and they could check if there was any recalls on it at the RIV office.
Which crossing did you use? Queenstown/Lewinston? Used bike?

I just called Lewiston bridge office and a very long voice message confirmed what you said. Btw, the number is 716-843-8359.

You need to send the e-mail with:
- Vehicle type
- Vehicle description (make and model)
- VIN number
- email address is buffalovinnyoffice@dhs.gov

When you cross the border, you need to have the following items with you:
- Vehicle
- Original title or certified copy
- Lien release papers
- Your ID
- Printed e-mail confirmation from the customs office.

Still working on the RIV part :)

Wow, the e-mail response from US customs came after 10 minutes. Same with RIV. US requires 72 hours. RIV requires 24 hours and gives you the file number.

Regarding mode of transportation. Is the cargo van a preferred way to move the bike? Or would the pickup truck be sufficient? Thanks!

Does anyone know if you can email the required documents to the Port Huron/Sarnia (bluewater bridge) crossing or is it something that only the Queenston/Lewiston accepts? If so, does anyone know the email address?

Thanks

Tried searching this thread to no available. Did anybody just ride their bike to Canadian Tire for safety/inspection? My CT is like 5 km away and I can take small streets. Would CT people complain? Thanks.

Forgot to mention, I will have insurance on the bike.

Do you mean you won't have insurance? I know my buddy did it the other day in Brampton and had no problem. He just slapped his old plate on and off he went.

No, I do mean that I will have insurance. My insurance company (MM) has no problems giving me insurance on the bike, as long as I give them Ontario ownership after the bike gets registered. I am just worried that people at Canadian Tire will get fussy with the bike not being registered in ON and me riding it.

So I just imported a 2006 Honda ST1300 from Florida. I think I got away super lucky when we went to change over the title, from the seller to me at the DMV - I was fully expecting to pay FL taxes on the bike when the wonderful lady behind the counter suggested I get a Demo Permit in the sellers name since I won't be registering the bike there, good for 30 days at a cost of $12 if I remember correctly. Saved me a good chunk of change :D she did.

I just talked to the folks at the Florida DMV as I'm looking at doing the same thing, they said you got lucky because you should not have been driving with that permit and if you'd got into an accident you and the seller could be sued and not covered by insurance. *shrug*

Does anyone know where I can find a list of which states have sales tax on used vehicles? Paying 6% Florida tax is out of the question for me, I might as well pay them to ship it to the border as it would work out to the same amount and save me a lot of time.

Does it make a difference if the seller is a dealer vs private sale?
