Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

To me it sounds like a good time to visit your uncle. Drive down in a suitable sized van and bring it back. Your experience shouldn't be much different than mine. You can check it out on page 37 of this thread. If it's a free bike it's worth a week. THEORETICALLY you could do it in three days but depending on the weather why not take a little ride when you're down there. Super riding country.

DO NOT CROSS OVER IN DETROIT / WINDSOR. Use Port Huron / Sarnia. Even though there is some road construction on the way to Port Huron, Windsor has a bad reputation and restricted hours.

TFX will do door-to-door for a grand including customs clearance (850 shipping 250$ customs). The bike was already imported into canada once (he moved to vancouver) and he has the old canadian paperwork and a BC plate on it so that might help.

I think its worth it to let TFX handle it for me as i'm neither a patient person nor am i a fan of paperwork and i don't want to insure it till my record is clean which ironically enuff is after i need to write my M test before my M2 expires..what a hodge-podge.

Apparently its comming up on the same truck as some barrett-jackson stuff though:
trucker: "Here's you're bike buddy"
Me: "don't worry, you keep it. Just leave that green hemi cuda and the 275GTB ferrari"

micheal,
i believe since the KTM was manufactured outside of NAFTA, you will be charged 6.1% (correct me if i'm wrong on the rate). that is in addition to the GST you will pay.

Hi DeAd-EyE.

I've read on this forum that bikes with lower output then 50bhp duty-free is it truth ??

Michal.

I havent read through this thread but wanted to share some news (at least to me) on importing.

I bought a ZX6R from the US in Feb 2008 and saved $2K. Easy process as long as you do your research.

Now I knew my warranty was no good in Canada. BUT I never knew that my warranty was not good in the US either. I called Kawi and they told me they started cancelling warranties once they were exported and they get this info from the CDN govt so theres no way around it. Bought the bike feb 14, warranty got cancelled Feb 17.

With hind sight 20/20, I would have still bought the bike and saved $2K since the warranty is only good for 12 months. Having said this, I'm having trouble with the tranny which might cost me a bit to fix.

The question I have refers to parts bikes that do not have a title (only bill of sale) and will never be registered in Ontario.

Bikes will be parted out and frames tossed.

Can these be brought across for the parts ?

Thanks.

i think you would have to fill out a Form 3 which makes them VINless and thus only good for parts never to be registered again. or you could just have the bikes split up and brought in as separate parts i think. don't quote me on that though....someone answered that back about 8 pages.

My new question:
I spoke to TFX and they said i don't need to have the recall clearance letter to bring the bike in? Is that correct? every other indication i have says that i need 2 have it sent to customs 72hrs ahead of time. Is it possible to bring the bike in, then when the recall clearance letter arrives, take it down to the licensing office and register it then?

thanks

yup recall letter has NOTHING to do with importing, only needed to get your RIV inspection paper after it;s imported

awsome zc, thanks for the info.
I just got a bundle of old paperwork by mail (original invoices and stuff) and amongst it was an OLD recall clearance letter that was ordered the last time the bike crossed borders. do you think RIV would just accept that letter or is there a time limit on the letters?

How's the tuono treatin ya btw?

hmm depends, is it dated? and how old?
you can fax it over, then call them in 2-3 days and see if it was accepted.

Tuono, LOVE it :D

don't think it is dated...on RIV's website i noticed it said it has to be recent to within 30 days. honda is taking forever to mail out the letter. i'm thinking of just cutting out the date and faxing it in and just being done with it before snow hits.

I've imported a number of bikes and even a trailer. Not at todays exchange rate :(

Timing is everything. When I bought last January the funds were about par and the private sale was a good price. I paid $8K USD for a bike that would have been $12K CDN here. The same deal today would be about $3K CDN more at the end of the road due to taxes being on the Canadian value. It still wouuld have been an OK deal but not huge.

I ended up with the bike licensed for about $10K

The same deal today would be about $13K

Buying privately here would be about even at $13K

Buying locally from a dealer would have been about $14K because of the GST

In an interesting twist on imports, an aquaintance purchased a warehouse in upstate NY. In the warehouse was 4 old Honda enduros from the late 90's. They had been purchased in Canada at a Hamilton dealer and had a sticker from the dealer on two. We stopped at the border on our way down and explained we were picking up 4 bikes that had come from canada, never plated in the states, they are offroad bikes. Coming back we stopped at the customs window, explained we got them from the guy that had a warehouse for the cost of getting them out of his way and got waved through, no paperwork or costs.
Somedays are better than others.

Buying an older racebike from PA. Has no title, only Bill Of Sale. It will never see road duty and will only be used on tracks.
What are the steps I take?

A friend just brought in a race car, got hassled a bit but finally got through. No RIV.

Quick question.. anyone have a contact of a person or company that actually does the importing for you? I heard that a number of entrepreneurs started a business where they do all this work for you and you pay them a small fee....

There's a lot of awesome deals on cars and bikes in the states right now...

honda motorcycle from michigan into canada
hi I will be bringing a honda motorcycle into canada.

I know that you have to pay a $200 RIV fee at the border, but what if the bike is declared as a gift?

How could I bring the bike accross the border without paying too much tax?

thanks

Re: honda motorcycle from michigan into canada
oh btw this bike is over 15 years old just a little trailbike....... so would that reduce the excise taxes?

How much taxes and duty would I pay if it is a gift from my friend?

There is a company in Belleville, CrossBorder Solutions
They can look after everything for you. They did a truck for me that I bought on eBay
Took him the bill of sale and 2 weeks later I had the truck.( it came from Texas)
I just had to take it to CDN Tire for RIV inspection.
