IMO there are two types of engineers. There are those that got into engineering because they were mechanical, electrical, etc. enthusiasts before universities and wanted to take it to the next level and there were those that got into it because they wanted a good job, parents expected it, they were good at math and physics, culture, etc.
The first ones tend to have some pretty good real world skills. The second group not so much and likely never will.
