Icon Textile Jacket fail

So that's ok?

No - it's not okay.

Again - I'm only assuming that your post was to suggest ICON textile is sub-par and can't hold up to some abrasion. We should take a Dainese leather jacket and see how it holds up to such an odd crash (re: handle-bar tear). Interestingly enough, however, is that a handle-bar (as unlikely as it is) is probably even less likely to get hung up on a Dainese jacket and other brands of that caliber, because they are designed just that much smarter to ensure the jacket is tight to the body (unlike a lot of ICON's baggy style).

Perhaps you were better off posting up a thread with the video exemplifying why tight-fitting motorcycle gear is important.

What caused that low side? Everything seemed okay and then the front gave out

"If i was educated, I'd be a damn fool"

It was sloppy riding, poor body position. His right foot was perched off the peg in the worst way, eliminating ground clearance. Wearing sneakers meant when that rubber/leather touched down, it caught and pulled his leg back. Went all down-hill (ha) from there.

A little bit of learning would have gone a long way for this guy.

His foot touched the ground before his foot peg. He then chopped the throttle and went down. The Icon Jacket was also 3XL, for a large guy he could've had the bike more up right and just shifted his body position a little bit.

I've seen some videos where riders negotiate the snake on similar style bikes with their feet stretched out & knee down.

actually thats a mesh jacket. its an icon compound mesh jacket. i have the same one same color. its one of the more unique items icon makes. its a mesh jacket that has leather along the outside of the arms for added protection. the part the ripped was mesh and i imagine that mesh would rip on any jacket. they also make a textile version. im not a fan of their marketing and logos everywhere but they make some interesting items like this.

I use my textile Icon jacket for stunting in the lot. Worked great so far. Very comfy and light.

I don't consider Icon real gear. They have no racing pedigree.
More bling than function

True about the lack of racing pedigree. However, some brands like Olympia have a very good reputation; yet they obviously have no racing pedigree.

I have an icon leather jacket. I went down twice with the jacket and I'm still using it. Just a bit scuffed.

As for the rider going down, it looks like he tried to increase the lean and his foot got dragged (because of the material) and then it go edged to the bike, lifting up the rear tire. Must've hurt.

I wonder if a proper boot with toe sliders might have helped.

Just ask Roomie, he knows first hand.

No pun intended eh lol. I was wearing a Joe rocket jacket textile jackwt which I can for sure say saved me from serious injury or worse. My gloves were a* and didn't hold up well at all.

That said I have an icon automag leather jacket which is great quality and I wouldn't second guess it holding up well. It's not at the cheap end of their spectrum though. A lot of icon stuff I wouldn't touch.

Why do they have to mention Icon twice in the front of that jacket?

I'm not sure that video is a proper indication of ICON's quality. I have a Dainese mesh jacket (Air Flux) for hot weather and I'm certain that the mesh panels in a similar lowside couldn't hold up any better.

I don't think mesh jackets are multi-crash items. Let's face it; they are a compromise. For the most part leather is the best choice in a street scenario (not sure what to think of the Motosport claims). Leather is sure hot though!

Mesh is probably not going to survive a crash but hopefully the armor, plus cordura/leather/plastic in the abrasion zones will keep road rash at bay all while providing 90% of the comfort of squiding it. This is why I shake my head when I see riders squiding. Mesh/vented/overpants plus a mesh jacket will give almost the same level of comfort but with a huge upgrade in protection.

I saw a rider the other day with nice boots and pants but a tshirt and Icon vest. Really nice Arai helmet on him too. Next rider a saw a few streets away had a nice Shoei helmet (looked like an older RF 1100) and jacket, but was wearing shorts and shoes! WTF?

Its all about the look man.. the look.. you got to look the part

I get a kick out of fools like the guy who blew by me on the highway the other day. Shoei x12: gloves, looked like boots and Keller jeans and a t shirt. When I say blew by me I mean passed me at 120 like I was standing still. All that gear doesn't mean **** with no jacket. Any jacket is better than none

My Joe Rocket held up pretty sweet. That's around 70 km/h

Perhaps this would be a good thing to start a thread about...

What would people say is/are examples of good Icon gear?

I would vote for:

The CE rated back protector that can be worn on its own or inside Icon jackets is very good. I have this in my SB1 mesh jacket and I think it is a quality piece of kit.

The Overlord Prime leather jacket seems really nice:

I think their helmets are a good value for the money. Are they a Shoei or Arai etc? Not sure how the Icon Airframe would stack up against similar price point helmets. I do think the Icon Alliance helmets stand up against other helmets in their price point.

For boots I wanted something which offered good protection, with easy on and off, and at a reasonable price point. They ended up being the A* SMX-5 and I would have been happy with the SMX-6. The Icon Elsinore boots look cool but they did not seem to compare to my A* boots from a protection standpoint.

Same with gloves. Icon does have the Icon Overlord gloves which gets some decent reviews but I wanted a full out race glove to upgrade to so I looked at options and could have gone with Held, A* etc. Ended up going local with Velocity VR-Pro.

Not sure about pants. Could have looked at some Icon stuff but I ended up going with Olympia Airglide and then complemented that with an Olympia Airglide jacket. Olympia stuff seems to offer a get value for the money.

So, from my perspective Icon makes some nice jackets (mesh, textile, and leather), helmets, and some decent armor. I guess it is all what you are looking for.
