I screwed up!!! Let's admit our stupid Mistakes -New Riders mostly

Yesterday, with my Gf on the back I got distracted by something off to the side, when I looked back, I was approaching a stopped car way too fast, Broke hard, Bike started to wobble and slide. I released the brakes, dumped the clutch and swerved. stayed upright, in the end was not too close a call, but scared the **** out of me. I need to focus more and not get Distracted.


Today on the way back from work, in the rain. I left my bike to warm up on the street and hid under a building overhang to make a phone call while it warmed, when I came back the needle was in the middle of the gauge (only happens in stop and go normally). I got on and started riding, the bike stalled in a turn onto Yonge, Started it, throttle was VERY sluggish, stalled again at Yonge and queen waiting for the light, could not get it to start, cars were honking, laying on the horns, then I realized it has been 200k since Fill(I normally fill at 100k) so I switched the petcock to reserve, the bike ran I rode home, chilled, annoyed at myself and slightly blind in the rain. my first time riding in the rain at night taught me it is a BAD combo, much harder to see VS rain in the day.

been there done that same mistake get distracted but i usually do it when there is no traffic. One rule i keep in mind when i have a passenger ride as safe as possible and never get distracted.
Worst combination is distraction and rain. I was going home in the rain after a long day being upset got distracted almost hit a car that stopped infront of me at a yellow light i slammed my brakes and back tire slid but i took control of the bike right away to avoid slipping all the way.

It happens man, don't feel bad!
As a newbie myself, sometimes I try to pay attention to too many things at the same time, and then the brain gives up. Came a bit too close to the van which started stopping very suddenly. I reacted with the front brake faster than the rear. The *** jumped, but thankfully due to low speed it wasn't too bad.

You did have a close call with the stopped car ahead of you. Should be feeling lucky and alive. Nothing to be upset about.
As for the honking drivers, it's obvious they don't ride so they have no idea what it feels like to be in this situation. Anyone who rides would NEVER lay on the horn, but rather try helping you instead. Ignore them.
 
Caught myself a bunch of time with cars in front of me stopping suddenly and me just looking around or just deep in my thoughts.....Now I just keep a pretty big distance between me and cars in front of me. Make it a good habbit.

I had one the other day in Oshawa,lots of lights close togeather and had to panic stop at the third light,going to fast was my fault.
 
Let go of the clutch to quickly from the get go and almost popped a wheelie. Nearly **** myself.
 
I see a lot of bikers following too close- I use to myself. First train of thoughts when I ride is always having a opening, a spot I can get into if I need to avoid danger.
 
Put the bike in neutral at a red light cause I'm a lazy ****, got distracted by some TNA pants. Light changes and I forget I'm in neutral. Figure it out after giving throttle and ******** myself. Figure it's in neutral, go to first gear and give it gas only to realize its not warmed up well and the bike stalls. Start the bike and give it lot of gas and pop the clutch almost doin a wheelie

lol just wait until you try and get off the bike without putting the side stand down or reaching down to switch over to reserve to discover that you had forgot to take the petcock off reserve last time you filled up.

Friend did the first one after a long day of touring. I did the second one when I was learning......it was a long, dark and cold push in late fall.
 
Coming into corners you are familiar with in your car and think you can rock it like Rossi on your bike. End up standing the bike up into the corner and barely make it, staring at the concrete barrier with your heart beating. Other - staring at girls and being distracted big time. Girls get you into trouble
 
Staring up my bike and revving the engine to Build oil pressure/warm it I was sitting with both legs on one side. And accidental pushed the lever to first gear. The bike jolted forward and left, pivoting on its kickstand, I jumped, it went down on its side, I couldn't catch it in time. I felt dumb.



Standing up straight in a parking lot space, with the bike between my legs trying to straighten my jeans and it rolled and fell


Putting down the kickstand about to park, decide to give the car to my right more room, pull forward and back. The kickstand was already down so I put it up and tried to drop the bike, then caught it, but still really absent minded stupid


Got a $30 ticket for permit only parking after midnight and a $60 ticket for parking a king and not moving it before rush hour


My second day riding I could not get the bike to start, tried to bump start it for half an hour started rolling t.it to the gas station figuring that was the issue, another rider rolled by, took him 20 seconds to flip the kill switch and start the bike. he made some excuse to save my ego instead of just saying that it was the kill switch, I had already pushed my bike over a block. Thank you anon rider.


On my third day I nearly got a ticket for riding my bike on a closed road and running a red because my I was picking up my girl from the college street festival, I went through I red light because it was a closed road and two cops on foot stopped me (although the told me they were normally motorcycle officers) they lectured me on riding 1 up on my third day driving on a blocked road and running a red because even if the intersection is closed a drunk driver could blast through. No tickets just apologies from me and a red ass from the verbal spanking.


When I was 20, before I moved to Toronto, I crashed my car on the gardener at the spadina exit, everyone was ok. My car leaked antifreeze, power steering and a little engine oil. I heard on the radio a rider went down there after I was towed away, 25 July 2010.



I'm sorry, I will do better.

Staring up my bike and revving the engine to Build oil pressure/warm it .

No need to sit there and rev it. Let it startup and let the idle settle down on it's own. Generally if you start an engine and let it run for about a minute you are ready to roll away slowly (keeping rev's at lower rpms) while the engine and oil temps come up.
 
Noobie mistakes I made you ask??? Hmm, lets see...

1. Assuming riding's a god given gift and I'm a natural PRO!! ( My greatest mistake.Got humbled the day I got the bike!)
2. Trying to ride away with the kickstand down.
3. Watching Twist of the wrist 2 and making the same mistakes it mentioned NOT to make( and then slapping my head silly!)
4. Not lubing the chain (I work with chains all the time at work!:p )
5. Overlubing the chain (I work with chains all the time at work!:p )
6. Following too closely behind a car ( got told about this by a very experienced rider)
7. Not keeping correct lane position while leading a group ride ( got told about this by very experienced riderS!)

...and on and on and on...put you to sleep, I will !!!

Every single point mentioned ( or not mentioned) herein is being worked on...
 
Didn't feel like going on the street to reach another parking lot so I decided to just drive up a grass hill, well the power band kicked in and I ended up 12 o'clocking the bike plus getting a little air time and smashed my break light off. Need to save the shenanigans for the trails.
 
Didn't put the bike on the centrestand while checking the oil. "Oh crap, it's REALLY low!" Dump almost another litre in and then noticed it was a lot more difficult to shift gears. It only took me a day or so to realize what I had done. Drained it down to the right level (which is a lot harder than FILLING it to the right level). Was in a hurry to get going so I rolled the bike forward off the centrestand and right over the plastic takeaway container that I drained the oil into, shattering it and sending oil everywhere....

It was my worst day so far.
 
Stripped my clutch basket nut today,tried to blame it on the socket,it wouldn't accept responsibility.....
Finally came to the conclusion it was my fault,was ****** at myself,now don't care ; )
