I rode squid yesterday.. for science!

I normally only squid it when booting around the city streets but yesterday, I took it to the highway to see what it was all about since I see quite a few people wearing shorts, helmet, shoes and a tshirt.

Route: I live in Mississauga and headed to Lakeshore & Parklawn area taking 401 to 427 to Gardiner.

I didn't go as far as the shorts, but opted for jeans, my TCX boots, gloves and a tshirt. I ride like this around town sometimes but always wore my leather jacket for highway cruising except for yesterday.

My findings are.. wind freaking hurts! I guess you'd get used to it but I couldn't help but be distracted at how the wind on my arms was annoying as hell! It's not comfortable at all. I think I got pelted with small pebbles a handful of times and it stings like a *****. Of course I never noticed this wearing my leather jacket which might be uncomfortable when stopped, it's a lot more comfortable when moving!

The neck on my tshirt got stretched to hell as well.. the wind on your chest is kind of numbing too. I kept slowing down to around the speed limit because it just wasn't enjoyable on the highway. Riding squid might be nice at slower city speeds but I will definitely not be doing it again on the highway. Too many annoyances that divert your attention away from what's important.

I ended up taking Queensway all the way home to avoid high speed wind that's how annoying it was. :confused1:

you might even say, it was as annoying as you posting every single inner thought process that fires across your brain cells.

that kind of annoying?

Thats funny! i rode squid yesterday on the highway for the first time in a loooong time! I rode from sauga to ajax everyday, and I said f it! I still had my boots, gloves , jeans and all that just no jacket. I actualyl found it very refreshing!! I didnt find the wind annoying at all! Im not a tucker either though like alot of people, so maybe thats why, but I really enjoyed the wind and will try it again. Wont do it all the time, but 40 degree weather with the humidex and im in traffic, hells yeah!

My apologies for not adhering to GTAM policies regarding thought processes.

I am an ATGATT guy.
However, I went to look at a bike for my 19 yr old son 1.5 hrs from home last week. When I got there, the seller and I chatted about the bike, it's history, etc. Then he said he'd like me to test ride before accepting my money.
So I did. However, I had no gear with me. I was in shorts and a t shirt, no gloves......It was almost terrifying! I felt very vulnerable and was very aware that I had no gear on. When I was young I used to squid every where at Mach V and it never crossed my mind. This was the first time I have squidded since 1998. I also had no ear plugs and every little sound was so loud.

That's awesome.. I'm all for personal choice!

Just wasn't for me, I love it at slower speeds for sure, but highway speeds take the fun out of it for me :(

try to pass trucks , especially dump trucks asap. They kick up debris the most.

such a pussy lol. j/k

I ride in a t-shirt all the time on the highway. I love it. I get hit with small pebbles from time to time....meh suck it up. Make sure you wear clean underwear when you ride because your shirt will ride up and show your boxers. I try not to wear any button up shirts with a collar while riding because the collar will flap around and slap you a few times while choking you. But I would rather wear a t-shirt than sweat through my long sleeved shirts and stink up the place when I get off my bike.

Think the occasional pebble is annoying....try sand blasting. Did it years ago riding thru the desert. Got used to it somewhat. It was so hot that at the highway rest stops, I'd stick my helmet under the tap and soak it. By the time got to the next stop it was dry again. Not the best time to be wearing a black leather jacket. But since than I've never gone without a jacket. Perforated the black jacket after a while, but I run a mesh jacket in the summer now. For me squiding it means wearing short gloves. :D

The thing is about squidding though, unless your wearing full leathers then really any dump you take wont feel good. Your jeans will shred and tear your skin apart anyways( i know cuz I have had it happen), and a mesh jacket is more to just ease your mind, cuz that mesh will shred faster then a sous chef!
So once in a while if you wanna throw on a t-shirt and feel the wind up your back, then do it!
Thats kind of what makes motorcycling cool! being able to do what the hell you want.

Just my 2 cents, but squidding a little now and then isnt the worst thing yo can do on a bike!

I love blasting down the highway with just a t-shirt. I have done shorts...unless its to the grocery store or back, no way. The heat from the bike fries your skin, not to mention if I'm holding the bike tightly with my legs, my inner knee touches the frame a bit...hot as hell. lol

In a t-shirt or just any shirt, the wind is great. Ya you get sandblasted once and a while, but oh well...you made that choice. I love it.

Don't forget that a motorcycle mesh jacket also has elbow pads, shoulder pads, back pads, etc. You will usually slide on one of those pads so it'll stop the jacket from shredding because the pads will take most of the damage.

The mesh jacket will still shred, then expose the pads to wear and possible loss. The pads are for impact protection more than abrasion. I count it as a one fall use. And hope it's not a long slide. Leather will survive longer and multiple falls.
