I keep stripping Philips head screws, what am I doing wrong?

How do you do this?

Wrap throttle sleeve in Al foil, use a propane torch. Surprisingly the paint off the bar end wasn't charred. I had no use for it anyway

Depends, blue loctite you can get away with a hair dryer, red loctite youd need a heat gun

The bolts on my bar ends were rusted together. There was still moisture in there when i took it out. The previous owner couldn't get it out, the screw head was slightly damaged. I think blow torch helped alot

...wait, are you guys serious? The battery screws and the bar ends aren't philip heads?!

My mind just got blown.

EDIT: Any recommendations on where to buy these screw drivers so I stop ****ing up everyone's screws + my own? lol

No kidding eh! I had no idea. Will be more careful with those battery terminals from now on.

Your only heating the bar end and not the threaded portion which is part the handle bar - ?

yep, heat it hot enough, it will get transferred

Yes, as Rockerguy said it will conduct through. I've done it a couple of times, one thing I found that helped was if you have the correct bit in a ratchet wrench so you can get a bit of constant torque on it. Once the bolt is moving it comes out easy. You may have to heat it for a good few minutes though.

Also....I'm totally stunned with the phillips thing too and now that explains a lot.

More tools....does Crappy Tire sell these things?

If someone finds a good small set (3 sizes, I believe?) of those JIS screwdrivers (doesn't necessary have to be the 'best bang for the buck'), please post here!

check your tool kit if your bike came with one. I'm pretty sure that's where my JIS came from. an old fella told me to put a rubber band then insert the driver and push twist. Works in a bind...also for stripped screws.

Changing to Robertson (square) head screws was most likely a joke, but swapping fasteners to socket head cap screws ("allen") wherever feasible is a darn good idea.

The carbs on my race bike have been completely changed over to SHCS. No more seized and stripped screws.

Just to throw this out there, I find that a lot of people don't use the correct sized Phillips screwdriver when dealing with Philiips screws, etc.. Start bigger than you think, and go from there.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but if you are ever unsure of weather your fastener is JIS or Phillips. JIS should always have a dimple marking in head of the bolt...Knowing that look at your bike and some of you will be surprised that all the bolts and screws you thought were phillips are actually JIS

bingo!!

Also I find that drywall driver bits (#2 I think) seem to hold better in JIS than regular Phillips drivers (as in Can Tire, Rona, dollar store). The profiling might be closer to a JIS driver.

Edit: It was a precision seet
