I keep stripping Philips head screws, what am I doing wrong?

From stock Ninja 250 bar ends to battery screws, I keep stripping them when removing or tightening. I noticed from the Mastercraft set I got there are different philip head screw bits/ends. Is there some way to match the size or am I not pushing down hard enough?

Those are not Phillips screws.

They're Japanese screws. Seriously. The difference is that the Japanese screws are at perfect 90 degree angles while the Philips aren't where they meet, and a few other differences. Phillips are designed to cam out, the Japanese ones are not.

You need a set of JIS 1012 B screwdrivers.

This is not a joke. They really are not Phillips screws.

A specific JIS screw driver will help. It is possible to get those out using regular screw drivers too...just have to push very hard and be careful.

...wait, are you guys serious? The battery screws and the bar ends aren't philip heads?!

My mind just got blown.

EDIT: Any recommendations on where to buy these screw drivers so I stop ****ing up everyone's screws + my own? lol

Bar ends are normally locktite. Heat them up before trying to break em loose

Change everything to Roberts. Fun winter project no?

I have a few buddies that come over to do the easy maintenance stuff. I can't change everyone's bike lol

I just realized my parents are in Taiwan :D

TIME TO ASK FOR A PRESENT!

If it looks like a Phillips but has a tiny dot in the head of the screw it's JIS

DealExtreme.

Some of the screws are Phillips (bodywork/bar ends it seems). Posidriv is a lazy in-between that will work on both even if your driver is the wrong size. You can still strip the heads, obviously, but Posidriv bits are often included in Canadian Tire/Princess Auto kits, whereas JIS ones are not.

There are dozens of JIS screws on the Burgman and I've used Posidriv-ers on all my bikes. The fasteners suffer little, if any damage. Haven't stripped a screw yet.
