Hey guys, 1988 FZR 250 with almost 43xxx.

I keep havign to bump start my bike. i bought a cheapo crappy tire digital multimeter. measured the battery and it was reading above 12v, but with the headlights and turn signals on it was reading a bit above 9v. not sure if its a battery issue, stator, r/r, or starter. basically whenever i try to turn it on it sounds really slow and does fire. can someone help me with some insight?

New battery?

thats what im thinking, not entirely too sure. im not eliminating the possibility that it could be a whole slew of things too though. called rosey today, and im gunna bring it in. but he says it could be the r/r and/or stator. didnt know how to test for these so ill keep you updated. i hope its just a battery. already replaced the fluids and charged fully last night. still the same issues. i look like a retard having to jump start every time.

itll be worse today because its raining :(

To properly rule out the battery, you should have it load tested. Canadian Tire should be able to do this for you, and generally they don't charge for it (for car batteries at least). You can't get a good sense for the state of the battery just by putting a DMM on it. Once you know if your battery is good or bad, you can continue troubleshooting.

My battery is gone to complete crap. I'm not sure if it even has any liquid left in it... maybe like, 1/10th of the bottom has some.
I've had to bump start it a few times at bike meets; always fun. It gets worse when it gets colder (right around now) I'm just don't have the cash to go buy a new battery.
Bump starting ain't so bad though... and you don't look like a fool; crap happens. Anyone giving you flack for having to bumpstart your bike obviously isn't a biker.

i agree, i dont even know if i should trust the readings. accuracy seems different from my CT bat charger that my dad bought vs the CT dmm. again, im bringing to rosey for a quick inspection. i hope its a quick fix.

My battery is on its last legs. Now that we're getting cooler overnight temps, it's dead every morning :(

That being said, if bump starting was in the Olympics, I'd bring home the gold

You mean weather like this? This is what killed my battery. My bike had to endure this every morning since february, up until it got warm out.

LOOOL. i love how you covered the license plate. anyways, would having a lithium battery combat the cold weather and it being able to start up better?

If your battery was previous close to death, the cold weather will pretty much kill it. That's what happened to mine... it was low when I got the bike. If your battery is in good condition, the cold shouldn't affect it unless it sits for weeks without being used.

What fluids did you replace? And how old is your battery?
The sounding slow but still firing is what happens to my bike when the battery is low. I'd say your battery is toast. So either your bike is having a hard time keeping it charged due to something wrong with the bike, or the battery just needs to be replaced.

Lithium batteries lose almost no power sitting in the cold. I am gonna pick one up pretty soon

$30 to $50 at GP and you don't have it? Scrape it together man!

Careful with the new lithium batteries, they are not all created equal! Talk to Glen at Flying Squirrel for a deal on Shorai, the best lithium battery made. I'm loving mine, we'll see how it handles the colder weather...

There were no days like that this winter, so I didn't get a chance to take pictures like that. I did get to ride in about 2inches of snow though, that was fun.

As for not having the money: I need more things first (like front break pads. Haven't really had anyfront break for about 1.5 months now)
Plus, my logic: battery still works so it's good to go!

My new Shorai should be delivered to my door any minute.....I don't think I've ever been this excited about a battery! It's also been over 10 years since the bike was out of commission for three days during the riding season.....

They are amazing. It will blow your mind how fast it turns over your bike. Left your key on with the fan running for an hour? No problem, she still fires right up. It's like having a deep cycle car battery in your bike ;)

Plus, the weight savings!! When you take out your old battery and replace it with the new one, you'd think the new one was just an empty plastic shell, that's how light it is :)

I read posts and reviews explaining how surprised people were at the weight. I thought i was prepared, then i picked mine up. Wow. Wont get it in until tomorrow, but I'll probably pick it up several times before then.

ROFL! We're just so used to heavy batteries. You're never prepared! When I first got it, I whipped out my volt meter just to check if it was a real battery! I thought for SURE they forgot to put the guts in mine.

You gonna charge her up before you put her in?

I couldve picked one up at riders choice for 150... I don't think I really need it as I just have a 250. Weight savings and what not wont really make a difference...
