I installed the creepy surveillance app/device to get an insurance discount

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if that was mentioned before, but I just signed up for the TD app thingie for my brand new Nissan Kicks and it quickly became apparent that it's easy to game the system.

I invariably score high (90%+) on <5kms trips and mediocre (~75%) on long trips.

You want to do short trips. It seems like you can only lose points during a trip, so the strategy is to break up your drive in multiple parts. Stop at Timmies on the way to your final destination and what would've been one 80% trip becomes two 90% trips. The same 20 points were deducted but over two trips. lol

And as far as I can tell, your average score doesn't take distance into consideration. It's [sum of scores/number of trips].

Go figure.

In the event of a claim, can the insurance company (or the police for that matter) use the data collected in the app to help piece together the accident details?

Why would they not

I haven't read the TOS but anyway I don't think the GPS/accelerometer data they collect is reliable enough to assess a crash. There are probably differences in the accelerometers used in various phones too which would make data analysis more complicated.

One example - I got dinged for multiple "severe" acceleration and braking "incidents" while driving a floaty pickup truck on the highway. Bumps in the road seem to have triggered said incidents. I was doing my damnedest to score high and ended up with a 36.

Just what we need, a George Orwell 1984 totalitarianism society.
I can't believe folks are caving in further to these government endorsed extortionists.
I would give up driving altogether before I expose my every move to these criminals.
The next thing you know it will be mandatory to f*** with your under ware on.
I may be warped and twisted but for good reason. After (at the time) 38 years of event free riding, I hit some grave and came off the bike. The bike was totaled and then my rates tripled.
I now thoroughly HATE insurance companies.
May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.

Single vehicle accident
you probably should have just bought a new motorcycle and used the other one for parts, likely would have saved money in the long run.

Agreed.
We now live in an age where doing the right and honest thing will cost you big time.
I can see how the moral fabric of society has broken down to the point where deceit and untruths are the norm.
I was not raised that way but am slowly degrading into the new norm.
The wrecked ZX10R would have probably made a great track day bike.

Through these apps the insurance companies are collecting data from you.... the data might be used to decline your insurance in future....

There are apps for fitness collecting personal health data too.. but do you ever wonder what these data are used for??? You would never know if any organization who get their hands on these data would use them to decline your health insurance ... worse, you may never know the real reason they decline your insurance.....

Sound like Sci-Fi but I would rather not to share my data with companies..

You think the increase has anything to do with the data they collected on you??
Desjardins just increased my premium over and above the Ajusto discount I earned. I'm going to lose the money I saved and more if I don't fire them immediately. Beware.

My guess it is straight economics. The pay out $xxx so they need to collect more than that. When too many people qualify for a 20% rate cut with no corresponding change in the claims, they charge the entire pool more to make sure they dont lose.

That's messed up. Hopefully TD doesn't do the same, I've been a good boy.

There is a line on that pic that sticks out for me, "recent acceleration events lowered your score".

How do they know if you accelerated just because, or you had to to avoid getting smoked by someone coming into your lane? Or you were merging onto a busy highway off a short ramp? What is the criteria for them to determine what is normal or excessive for the situation without actually seeing what you are doing?

Shopping around for insurance and using the quote tools online checking the box for this device lowered my rate by about $4-5/mo...not anywhere near close enough a savings to make me want to have them essentially looking over my shoulder everytime I drive.

Any "acceleration event" is bad, there is zero assessment of the situation. You're supposed to anticipate everything and use a very light touch on all the controls. But above all, keep your trips short.

just say no to all this , until its built into your car and you can't.
It's already built into late model cars and trucks and planes and trains....
All the insurance company is doing is reading the data your car collects.
There have been cases when insurance companies, and claimants, have pulled that data for a court case.

With the exception of Tesla, while cars log that data, very few send it back to the mothership without active intervention. It may occasionally be pulled in after a major incident, but most just gets overwritten without ever being seen or analyzed.

This app is creepier than you think. Apps like Adjusto are the first step of the initiative to cut on the insurance's costs, not yours. Right now they offer you discounts as incentive to install it. The goal is to adjust and perfect their scoring system. As you already have discovered, how you drive or what kind of a lifestyle you have dictates your insurance premium. However , later on, when the government will pass the bill making these apps mandatory to install to be covered by the insurance company, things will get much worse. For example, refusing to provide coverage based on your habits will be very common. They will control everything. In addition, there are already privacy concerns with how invasive their data mining could be. Unless forced, I will not install such apps.
We don't have much control over insurance premiums or how they are calculated. Representatives are often say that at the x address there is an increase in car thefts. Or x make x is less safe. Whatever... Here is the site where you can see how your neighbourhood is doing. Maps
Check crime, car thefts, break and enter stats. And... maybe move to a safer area. That's about it.

Yep, that is exactly where this thing going. Our driving habits wilk be transparent , so insurance companies will have more control over their money. All is needed is the Bill to have these apps to be mandatory :). It will come soon. So, if someone likes a little adventure on the road, he/she will be even denied the coverage. Total Control.
