I live in a Rural area and rode an e-bike for 2 seasons. It paid for itself in gas savings. However, if you think cagers are scary when you're on a motorcycle, try an e-bike. They expect you to be going much faster than 30 km/h. They don't leave any room when passing you, especially those driving Mercedes or Porsche SUV's I've had my shoulder slapped several times by their mirrors. I figured if I'm going to ride I really need a proper machine. I sold the e-bike and bought a real motorcycle and feel 100 times safer! I have proper gear, can do the speed of traffic (or more as necessary) and cagers tend to share the road. The only thing the e-bike did for me was to give me confidence in slow speed manoeuvrings!
I think the scooter style e-bikes need a total overhaul and to be made to be LSM class machines. Electrically assisted standard bicycles should be the only e-bike allowed as everyone understands what a bicycle is, what it looks like and what it is capable of.
The e-bike was fantastic at the campground though. It was quiet and capable of carrying lots of groceries.
Oh, and I'm not lazy, unemployed or constantly drunk so you can add that to your stereotype!
