I hate colonoscopies

The whole be terrified, colonoscopies are horrible. Well it’s not fun but it’s not horrible. Colon cancer is horrible.

Spent enough time in GI/surgical centres to hear enough horror stories.
It's not just the colon cancer itself and the loss of dignity that causes. One story sticks with me (and I'm sure it's common enough):

Patient didn't catch the cancer in time, it spread to his lower spine and then grew/snaked itself upward like a vine, entwining itself as it went. Completely inoperable when it starts doing that. All he could do was wait for it to reach the brain and then death.
Very sad and nightmarish stuff.

I think that's pretty much a slam dunk for getting the colonoscopy, regardless of any inconvenience or discomfort there may be in doing so.

I do the poop on a stick test. I had a colonoscopy years ago on a different matter.

Radiation from colon cancer treatments can affect the nerves five or ten years later. A friend is cancer clean after ten years but his walking deteriorated from plodding to cane to walker. Wheelchair is next.

Just wanted to bump this up.

Had it done today along with an endoscopy to investigate another matter.

Honestly, it wasn't a big deal. I was slightly sedated and watched the whole thing on the screen as he was doing it.

Zero pain.

Don't hesitate. Book it. Could save your life...

Tell me more about the sedated part.

Can we bring our own "sedation"?

Would love to watch my own colonoscopy while "sedated"...

First one, I could watch from the screen, it was also a colonoscopy/endoscopy,
but I lost much of the content from the drugs, except that I have a herniated stomach.
Second one, I was right out.
Now I'm on the frequent flyer program, due to the number of polyps.

Fentanyl plus medazolam gives you concious sedation.

When the anesthetic hit me I went out cold -- blotto.

I dropped my phone to the ground -- disappointed all the nice folks tuned into my live stream.

It depends which way the camera was facing when it fell. It could have been a whole lot more educational than you were planning.

Colon scope and endo scope , out cold . There is nothing I need to see there .
Not like I’m doing any of that work on my own .

Just think. Forty four years ago I was part time chauffeur for a guy that had his gall bladder removed six months earlier. He was just getting back to work. Back then they opened you up like a gym bag. Now it's day surgery and you're not supposed to lift anything heavy for a few days.

Just did my second. They haven't been a big deal, but having a procedure done is never fun. 10 polyps removed this tim whatever that means.
A number of polyps put me on the watch list with lots of colonoscopies as a result (every six months at one point). They tried to remove a "flat" polyp (they have a name (?) and are the worse type) that was kind of hidden in a fold. It wasn't complete and it eventually turned cancerous resulting in a colon re-section. I was very lucky that it was caught in time with no other treatment required. It is serious stuff, and as much as I hate the prep and the procedure, the alternative is grim. Three years clear now, and things are not like they once were, but it's manageable.

Geez. The Millenials on GTAM must be reading this thread and wondering, "Where the hell am I?!?!"
Who do you think is driving us to the appointments?

Colonoscopies don't come without risk...including rupture to the colon. Oops. Don't be doing them unless you have a reason to be doing them...ie prone to polyps, colitis, crohns. How about adding a tablespoon of psyllium husk powder to a glass of water each morning, swigging it down and keeping your colon in perfect working order? Preventative maintenance will keep you out of hospitals... which have a habit of killing people.
