I had a good experience with cops today

He said most guys split on them. They probably don't feel as giddy as you do. I'm glad this cop experience was good for you.

Kind of, but at the same time not really. If they were looking for a stolen bike, there would probably be no keys to hand over.

This is common practice in the U.S. I find. State troopers in NY, Michigan, Ohio, Delaware and Mass. have all asked me to hand them the keys to my Evo and stay in the car when I had it.

Yes, it is weird that you "feel good" about this experience.

Regardless of reasons for the stop, when he asked for the key you should have said "why do you want to detain me? are you placing me under arrest?"

This exactly right here. Exercise your rights guys, don't be the next sheep. I wouldn't just hand over my keys if I knew that I did nothing wrong. Don't get pressured by cops.

Have you ever had a cop check your vin ?
License checks
Insurance looks legit
Yup it's a red KAwi
I,ve never had a cop go any further

I've been pulled over for nothing before.
They also checked my VIN.

The reason you got pulled over is probably cuz the cop rides, wanted to kill time, check out your bike and maybe chat a bit?

Same as in my case, the cop who pulled me over was also a rider, HAD to mention he was also a rider. Had to also mention the year, make, model and colour of his bike. 5 minute spot check.

You implying you run from cops?

Officer had no legal right to seize your property (key).

But on a valid stop, he could ask me to step off or out of my vehicle, right? Just to ensure that I didn't leave?

I don't know why that's so difficult to understand. If you are I. The road, the have the right to randomly check anyones papers at any time for "no reason".

They can run you, but not pull you over/detain you without legitimate probable cause.

I'd be rather annoyed. Happy I didn't get some kind of ******** ticket but still annoyed. Seems like they shouldn't have any right to do that especially since they can run your plates and get that info.

I'd say a good 80%+ of cops driving in the same direction as me thats behind me always end up running my plates. If they're beside me, they end up behind me within the next km running my plates. I just sit there watching them typing away and looking at their laptop. No real reason to pull me over most of the time...

Cant they just run your plates and see an attached insurance policy from that as insurance is registered to the vehicle anyways?

I've had a cop wave me over cause he wanted to ask me about my helmet cam. Kind of stupid since he waved me to stop where he was standing beside his car blocking the one lane that was there, but I was happy I didn't get a ticket.

How about suspected stolen vehicle? Or in most cases license plate not clearly visible?

Just to add, believe it or not lately I've been having the best "encounters" with OPP and DRPS. Never thought those words would come out my mouth

They cannot check whether you have insurance on a motorcycle by running the plates.

Nobody runs from cops. Ever. Radio is faster and they have helicopters. The cop described in this thread was just green. Runners always get caught.

lol How are you so sure?

So you are thankful for being stopped for no reason?
lol - what a nice interaction, they illegally stopped you for no reason and did not give you a ticked also for no reason - Super awesome cops, however you call them because someone stole your bike and they are too busy to come. Awesome

Yeah - stopped him in a live lane, and took his property! OP - for how many cycles of the light did you sit there with traffic whizzing by you?
