I got a bike, yay!!!!!!!!!

Just bought my first bike (01 GSXR- 600) and i love it so far. I've read its good to learn on a 250 but from the moment i hopped on i felt comfortable with the machine and i respect its performance abilities ( i don't ride like an *** hat). I'm used to driving my 335i (300hp) and i now realize cars are slow as ****. Bikes offer an unparalleled sense of freedom and every time i pass a fellow rider i get a hand gesture, what a beautiful community. I don't know why i took so long but better late than never. A lot of my boys ride so I've been giving a ton of advice ( don't listen to music for a while, maintain the chain etc) Any tips you guys have would be greatly appreciated. P.S. im looking for a new helmet so please recommend something good/ cost efficient.

Thanks in advance

Congratulations on your purchase.

Don't ride any faster than your gaurdian angel can fly.

Congrats on the new bike.

Take it to an empty parking lot and practice slow speed stuff and braking. Ride your limit when you are with your friends.

As for helmets, Royal Distributing was having a sale on some nice AGV helmets last week... as low as $120 before tax

Best tip is don't take tips from your friends. They may mean well but there is a lot of bad advice out there and what works for them may not work for you or be the rite way to go about it.
Take a riders training coarse, watch twist of the wrist.
And welcome to the community.

congratulations on the new motorcycle and the BMW.

Hey congratulations on the bike, keep the shiney side up and enjoy!

congrats on the purchase!

Best piece of advice is while you're still getting used to the machine, do NOT let other drivers pressure you. IF you stall, if you're taking your time making a right into traffic, etc. just ignore their intimidation tactics to get you to go, their honks, don't rush! If you rush while you're still green that could lead to a lot of bad things. Just take it within your comfort zone and don't let other people invade it!

Congrats on the bike. I've had an Icon helmet and a Shoei helmet and you really do get what you pay for. Not saying the icon was bad but the Shoei is in a different class. You have 1 head, don't skimp on quality.

What is different on the Shoei that makes it that much better? I have an Icon too, very happy with it, just curious what can be better. I tried the RF1100 at Kahuna, it seemed like it's "shorter", I can pull the Icon down more...I hope it makes sense what I mean...

I had an Icon Alliance. It was ok because I hadn't tried anything else. The immediate differences I noticed when I tried on the RF1100 (and rode with it) were that the venting is better, you can really feel the air moving through it, the helmet is much quieter as well. At speed, the icon was extremely loud. The way the RF1100 "sucks in" the visor really helps to create a wind tight seal. It has a position lever on the side of the helmet that allows you to "crack" it open without raising it should you need to open it up for defogging at a stop.

I know what you mean regarding it being shorter, and it actually helps me when hunching down when i ride. With the icon I was restricted with how much I could raise my head when I was hunkered down over the tank.

The shield auto adjusting lock makes it super easy to swap shields if required. Much easier than the icon system.

The RF1100 also has cutouts for speakers inside if you are at all interested in that sort of thing.

There are differences in the construction, fit and finish as well, but those were my immediate observations.

congrats :)

Just be safe and enjoy the ride !

My first bike was a ZX6R , i couldn't fit on a 500 or lower, not because of weight but because i'm tall, lol

Thanks for all the well wishes, the good advice is much appreciated. I got hit off my friends bike 3 days into my riding career (last week) due to a ****** that ran a stop sign, it sucked but it didn't deter me from riding. Apparently everyone drops once. Keep the advice/ helmet recommendations coming!

Syncro. sorry to hear you got clipped but glad your ok.

the Gixxer 600 is a is a quick bike, I hope you respect it. you said " I'm used to driving my 335i (300hp) and i now realize cars are slow as ****."
just remember you dont have the protection on a bile you do in a bmw.

Keep you knees in the breeze and keep the shiny side up.

My favorite snob car joke, what's the difference between a porcupine and a XXX brand car?
The pricks are on the outside of the porcupine!

We're glad you've come out of the cage! Enjoy the ride and watch out for cagers texting while driving!

Welcome to the wonderful world of motorcycling.

My advice:
- Wear a leather jacket, full-face helmet and gloves at a minimum. (buy a jacket with vents, so you're not dying on hot days). Spend GOOD money on these items; you get what you pay for.
- Google "Motion blindness SMIDSY" or read THIS
- Keep your tyre pressures at stock levels
- Keep your chain well lubed, and tensioned according to the helms manual
- Get a helms manual for the bike

Enjoy!
