Hug a Pole

A few of my family members have started applying for visas to the US and Canada
And both Canada and the US have said they will fast track any Ukrainian CITIZEN'S visa.
And both US and Canada have said that brown people and muslims are on their own. GOOD LUCK with that.
Ukraine has a liberal immigration policy when it came to students (foreign students bring hard foreign currency). If you are a foreign student with a passport, you can go home... IF you can get out.
Problem being some of these foreign students used Ukraine's liberal student visa to escape their home country and to start a refugee claim. They want to leave Ukraine but are effectively stateless and have no where to go

I generally don't like people that jump queue or play the system with my go-to thought being "Back of the line buddy". What about the person who is just as desperate but follows the rules?

Who do you want in the country, an ethical person or one that milks the system?

The average median wage in Ukraine is less than that of Jamaica. Unless these students are using Ukraine as a stepping stone to the rest of Europe I don’t know how prevalent that issue really is.

That is exactly what they were doing.
Enroll in a 2 year program in Ukraine which gets you out of country and you have two years to work on your next move.
There are lots of people in the same boat here in Canada, but until recently Ukraine was MUCH cheaper than Canada. Canada is the stepping stone to the US. Get a student visa to study practical nursing in Canada and when you graduate you'll have no problem getting a Canadian or US work permit
If you had money and want to get into the EU, get a student visa to Ireland.

My wife‘s parents were Polish and we have Polish and Ukrainian family members here. The compassion being shown is fantastic but also not totally unexpected. If any country knows what it’s like to be invaded by people you don’t want on your land it’s Poland. They know exactly what’s happening in Ukraine.

They are also resilient and resourceful. I’m expecting to see stories soon about 30 Polish Mig fighter aircraft partially disassembled shipped by trucks and rebuilt in Ukraine to get round any perceived NATO involvement.

The thing that REALLY shows they are good people though is the fact they are looking past, some of the worst atrocities committed to them by the forefathers of the people they are now saving. Poland has definitely stepped up to the plate and deserve recognition.

The mig debacle is another story, and Poland did the right thing. USA and the rest of nato tried to get them to give the jets to Ukraine and allow them to fly out of polish airfields, possibly attracting the Wrath of Russia with zero ability to activate article 5. When the polish Minister told the USA they can have the jets and fly them out of the nato airfield in Germany, the US and rest of nato started making excuses of red tape and logistics etc... almost felt like a setup.

Interesting....I assume that's to do with 'if you're invaded by a different country we will defend you...but if you start it...we will not'..

Need to do some reading.

There are some lifestyle YouTube videos on Ukraine pre invasion and it is cheap there. Buy a farm for what we spend in rent. Groceries are cheap. Most places are substandard to our expectations.

Fixer upper?

Food?

Apparently there is some issue in Montreal with former Russian strippers all trying to hide out as Romanian and Ukes and being called out by coworkers . Slapping and hair pulling .

Possibly some field work required for more info

I concur. Can we make this a business / humanitarian trip? For reasons...

I'm sure my wife will understand...

Post 2014 the Donbas is dirt cheap... but Russian neighbours trying to convince you that you are a Russian national would get old right quick.
Further west, west of Kiev if you squint you could easily convince yourself you were in Manitoba

Foreign students almost always come from families with the financial means to send them abroad and finance their education, it's doubtful many, if any, of these students are refugees or stateless.

While they may not have their home country in the long-term plan, home is where they should be going now -- not competing for space and resources needed for Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland.

You take Montreal, I'll cover Toronto.

Looks like the tide is turning in Poland against the refugees slowly….

Everyone was happy were helping out, other EU countries are slapping us on the back…but not as many open doors as in Poland.

Govt has allowed the refugees to jump the queue for doctors, surgeries, subsidized housing, and all sorts of other benefits that the Polish have been waiting months and years for. Anger is starting to make its way slowly through some people because they’re frustrated…

‘Where did all this money come from? When we needed help you said ‘no money’ but now there is so much money.’

Not to diminish the topic as the Poles have stepped up even to giving/lending fighter aircraft but the title threw me and considering where it is located.

This sort of pole hugging popped into my mind.

The economics aren't simple as it's easy to spend next week's paycheque.

Waves of immigrants or refugees cause waves not unlike waves from a boat launch. A big boat suddenly being thrust into the water rocks other boats nearby, upsetting the status quo. The launch of a huge ship is exciting until you go below on your nearby boat and see your belongings scattered and broken on the cabin sole, the scuff marks on the topsides that will never polish out.

Until the conflict is resolved we have no idea of the long term outcome. The refugees have largely been women, children and the elderly.

When peace returns will the women and children return to Ukraine or will the husbands join their families in the new adoptive countries?

Who will care for the elderly in the adoptive countries?

Tough love is sometimes saying NO. We have some hard moral decisions to make and the brunt will NOT fall on the 1% rich. I'm suggesting a lowering of expectations with housing, entertainment, toys and the other things of the American dream. Does your 3000 SF house get divided into two 1500 SF homes? Reality sucks and it hits the falsly priviledged harder.

I even expect conflict between Ukrainians from Ukraine and those of Ukrainian decent here. If you've ever been to Dauphin Manitoba you will understand.

But not too tight:
