Hudson's Bay closing

I guess the Zellers stores inside the Bay stores did not help them stay afloat.

From a marketing perspective it is too bad they didn't get another year or two and drive the buy Canadian, it may have helped... although owned by US and products come from overseas but I said marketing not reality...

There are no surprises with this but we did note during xmas shopping that they (and Saks) were done, no inventory in the stores, lots of dead space and no customers.

I think I finally gave up even going in when the segregted everything by brand.
If I want pants, I want to go to the pants section, not explore the entire store because there are pants in every area.

Sad to see it go, but the rent on these enormous anchor stores means you need to move massive amount of product at larger profit margins than your competitors.

This is probably the most amount of shoppers The Bay has seen at once in several years.

Ah hell no. I am assuming they are doing the standard program of 10-20% off. I didn't want it at full price, I don't want it at 20% off. I have an HBC giftcard old enough that it doesn't have a pin. Tbh, I don't know how they track what's on it. It has a phone number and UPC code. No other obvious numbers/strip/etc. I haven't worked up enough caring to sit on the phone for hours to find out whether it's worth a trek to a store.

One of the times RONA bailed there was all sorts of dodginess going on (after the liquidator had possession). Items marked way up and then a big discount so you feel good but clearance price was above pre-sale price. Other things with legitimate discounts from RONA pricing but they were still more than HD. Each time RONA goes bankrupt, I buy some more boxes of nails for the guns as they are expensive and the clearance prices are decent.

If someone really wants a Citizen or similar, there may be a deal to be had but timing it for a sufficient discount while still having stock is too much work for me.

I think that was a ploy to keep the Zellers name and not be sued by pensioners. Something like that.

Late last year I walked around a Bay store and the Zellers section, was completely dead, no staff just me walking around.

If HB goes away it will be a bit sad considering the history and connection to Canada.

Unfortunate history on the HBC . However they had a great run and probably lasted forty yrs longer than they should’ve . I did shop there much , but I do feel for the nine thousand employees getting the boot .

The Bay was awfully easy to make fun of for so many reasons (sometimes trying to find help was hilariously difficult), but I will miss a shopping experience that felt very old-fashioned and a holdover from a slower time, especially held against the indignities of big box stores. Ironically, I did most of my recent shopping from them online, as they had super-quick delivery and the prices were surprisingly competitive.

Apparently the store layout with the tills in the middle, combined with the invisible staff, was a huge problem for theft.

RIP Simpson's, Sears, Eaton's, The Bay. Middle-aged and older women in buns, blouses and brown skirts will have to seek employment elsewhere...

I was thinking about the iconic HBC blanket and their history. Where were they made and where have they been made recently.

I don’t expect Walmart prices.
