How to not spend $25,000 on a $9,500 motorcycle like this guy did

Cops involved for what? The company that potentially committed fraud is gone. Police will just argue that this is a civil problem and should be pursued as such. Again, since the company is gone, nobody to sue. It takes a hell of a lot for police to bother with a fraud investigation.
If there is a contract, written or verbal, and no weapons were involved the police say it's a civil matter.

Want to lose more? Involve a lawyer and double the ante with little chance of recovery.

Soooo right.

I one had an immoveable tenant and got a lawyer involved.

The tenant essentially wanted $8K to FO. In the end I spent just over $20K on the lawyer to get him out.

On the one side, I'd rather have given the lawyer the money (or literally burn it) than a single dollar to that SOB, but...diminishing returns....

Hopefully the other guy had to pay as well. Unless you had to fight legal aid or LTB.

We just cleared up a will that ate a lot of the settlement but the opposing party lost more.

My spidey senses tell me RE dealers are not the kind of people one should deal with...
No, but also yes, so... kind of...

I think the issue is that the cost to be an RE dealer are much lower than that of any of the major "A-Tier" brands.
The lower the buy-in price, the more likely you are to end up with sketchy individuals rep'ing the brand.

In Toronto, years ago, we had an RE dealer... the owner had mixed reviews and has since packed all his stuff and left the country...
We have a new one here now but I don't really know anything about them good or bad so I can't offer any valid judgement or praise.

PS: I should add that in one of my past jobs in the biz I used to work with Old Vintage Cranks here and there on occasion and they were always straight up good salt of the earth types in my eyes. I think someone mentioned they aren't an RE dealer anymore though.

yes...it seems they are no longer a RE dealer

in addition I believe they are also the people who sold one of the members here a new bike without a functioning engine, and then basically ignored them and refused to help...after much back and forth I believe flying squirrel had to step up

I'll take your salt of the earth thing with a grain of salt

Hmm, doing the math, I'm starting to wonder if maybe Ken retired/sold out. I haven't talked to him in a decade so it could be that he no longer owns the place. Fair point to you.

yep that was me! ken was still there at the time. not sure about now. bought a brand new 2021 RE. broke down on the 3rd day i had it with only 120km on the odo.

my communication (documented in email because i like a paper trail) with them was basically

- me saying my bike was dead and that it was towed to a local dealer
- OVC basically responded with "oh damn. we haven't had a problem with our other bikes. please let us know with updates"
- i wrote back in detail as to what the local dealer (flying squirrel) was trying to do to fix it and what they thought was wrong with it (cylinder failure)
- no response from OVC
- i wrote again saying i was disappointed in OVC's service, lack of followup and any sort of customer care and demanded a refund
- no response from OVC
- called them left a voice message. no response from OVC

for what its worth, flying squirrel ended up replacing my bike entirely (although royal enfield north america wanted me to sign an NDA and not tell anyone what happened. i refused because they offered no compensation. so why should i?)

honestly, much props to flying squirrel for taking care of me. they were prompt with follow ups. the owner/manager gave me their personal cell # to reach out of office if needed. i mean obviously they had to honor the warranty on the bike but at least it didnt feel like they were outright avoiding me like OVC.

the new bike is working fine! and tbh i havent heard of anyone else who got a lemon besides me so im just chalking it to bad luck. im actually about to general maintenance on it before going out for a short ride. been mostly taking my ducati out the past few weeks whenever i could. just wish my first experience with the brand wasn't tainted like this.

I bought my INT650 from Classy Chassis in Lakefield after OVC didn't even have the courtesy to reply to my emails. They are great folks, they delivered the bike last April 15th (it was snowing) and I've had nearly 4,000 kms of trouble free operation. Parts and accessories are cheap and readily available. Regular maintenance is easy, download the service manual and have at it.
It is what it is - a good bike for a good price. Comparable machines like the Kawasaki W800 or Triumph Street Twin are thousands of dollars more for no appreciable advantage.
@iblastoff had a bad experience that likely could have been solved by a competent technician but nobody tried, it was deemed easier by RE North America to just give him a new bike. RE Toronto (Flying Squirrel) helped him out and kudos to them. I have never, in all my years around the business, ever heard of that happening.
The clown in the original video got what he deserved - he was stupid and paid the price. Just because you have a YouTube channel doesn't make you smart. The guy in the second video basically pointed that out.
