How to help a friend who got laid off today.

Hi murf,
All Excellent points - people need to be aware that they a required to seek employment while waiting for a settlement that may take years. Also noticed that it was easier for me to locate a Job when I was working. Therefore if the company has given you notice or you suspect a right sizing. ( New HR buzz word) you might want to consider using the remaining time at your job to search for a job rather then wait until you are out the door and looking in. It all depends on your length of service. Or if you might want to wait until you are offered compensation package like early retirement.

HR - "We're Right-sizing!"
employee - "But.....but there's no one here!"
HR - "And now we're the right size!"

Thanks. Three engineering jobs I've had (including an internship) have ended up being terrible. I am seriously considering a career change. I have a few ideas.

I'm in the same boat as u except its not engineering

The first thing I would recommend doing is contacting an employment lawyer. I know someone that deals with employment law if you are interested pm me.

Setting up a Linked in account and connecting with those you work with in the past as well as those senior leadership positions can sometimes yield good Job offers. HR departments use this site to search for prospective candidates.

Hold off.

See if you're still there Friday.

It's friday I still have a job and I've managed to get a few interviews for my friend locally. I think he'll do ok since there is still a shortage of Junior Android developers around here. Thanks for the ideas/help everyone.
