How to get TV Channels with antenna

Mississauga/Oakville border near 403/Dundas Timmies. The antenna is facing West inside my house at the most west-ward point. I would probably get more channels if I relocated it to the roof.

I did an install there a few years ago. Good location if you're on the hill. We did a roof-mount setup, got everything from Toronto/Hamilton/Buffalo.

Same area. I have a CS4 installed in my attic, pointed south-east (halfway between CN Tower and Buffalo). I get everything reliably except for ION and WBBZ.

Any recommendations on a good installer for roof system? Someone who knows what they're doing and the city by laws and codes? Oh, and grounding the antenna? Much appreciated.

I bought that too and agree it's garbage. The most important thing is location. I have a 69 dollar rca indoor antenna and I get about 20 channels. I am near the lake in Scarborough. Where r u?

Hey kiwi, go to any satellite place and they can recommend an installer. It's not that hard to do. I pm'd you with my number since we have the same bike just now. I have been getting free channels for about 4 years. The best is to have one of the old style towers. You're rocking if you can get one of those or you can install an external antenna in you attic if you can get in there. Now if only I could get free internet

If any installer will give you a fairy tale about not needing a ground with a roof mounted antenna (waste of money, etc.), just kick them out. That's one advice I can give. Yes, grounding is expensive, but it's well worth the money compared to burned down house due to lightning strike.

saveandplay.com

Bought an 8-bay Channelmaster for $100 and pull in HD 1080i images better than pay-cable TV. Get 23 stations including those in Buffalo. Pick it up at saveandplay in Mississauga, they have all the knowledge. Even have a dual-tuner PVR that records two stations at once while watching a recorded program.

Never had cable, don't need it, unless you are a sport nut. Fill your leisure time with riding, not watching TV.

Bumping an old thread. What kind of channels do you guys get?
I just need 3 channels, History, Discovery & a news channel

You wont get history and discovery. No all-news channels either. The news will come from the local network channels, e.g. CTV or CBC.

I see

Thanks.
Seems they don't have what I want

Well, unfortunately nothing in this world is free, except for OTA channels :). You get all local (Toronto/Buffalo/Grand Island/Hamilton) channels in HD quality, which is much higher than super-compressed "HD" bullsh*t that Robbers and Bhell feed you for the insane prices. I compensate with Netflix and internet subscriptions to some sports channels.

If you don't mind a shady setup I can put you in touch with someone that'll give you a cloned Bell receiver. Do you think you only need one receiver? If so it'd be pretty cheap monthly, $25/mo for everything but the premium movie channels. Everything under the "best" column: http://www.bell.ca/Bell_TV/Channels

It never gets shut down (as long as you don't accidentally purchase PPV or whatever), works sweet. Let me know if you're interested.

Just wondering if an antenna is installed in the attic, how do you run the cable from up there to the living room on the main floor?

For my main floor TV there was a bedroom closet directly behind it so I went into my closet ceiling (from the attic) and ran the cable down :) Works great.

Thanks but I think I'll give OTA a try. I heard the quality is much better so I'm curious

Honestly speaking, with the advent of media alternatives online (i.e. Netflix, HULU, etc) and a good HD antenna, you don't really need much more.
The biggest hurdle is if you're big into sports, there are a few online streaming places you can go to, but the quality isn't the same unless you like watching it on your laptop/tablet. Having said that, going to your local watering hole and nursing a couple beers during a hockey/football game isn't so bad considering you're not paying Triple Digits/month just to watch 2 channels you like and 150 you never touch.

With an HD Antenna, I get 11 Channels but really only watch 3-4. CBC, CTV, CityTV and Global. You have your news in the morning before work and at night when you're home, not to mention they have MOST of the popular shows. Everything else, you can find online. With the binge watching of entire seasons of TV shows, I can't sit through a 20 min show with 10 min of commercials and then wait a week for the next episode. That seems so archaic. YMMV.

Might take a while to get the type of setup you like/want, but honestly, you don't need to watch that much TV anyway, and the extra money you save can easily offset other expenses, like bike insurance! :D
