How should i pick up the bike i am buying?

Hello everyone, i am purchasing my first bike soon, and the fella lives in missisauga and i live near barrie. I only have my M1 so i cant ride it on the highway or else i would just take the train and ride it home. I am not sure the best/cheaper way to safely get this bike up to my place... i dont know anyone who can ride to ride it up nor anyone with a low trailer who might be able t drive it up. Is there maybe a company that can cheaply 'tow' it? someone suggested that..but i am not sure what the best thing to do it. It must be something trustworthy - dont want someone to steal it etc.. Thanks in Advance!
 
If you have a hitch and tie downs, Uhaul is an option.
 
Thanks! i will def check those guys out, ill give them a call in the morning :) have you used them before? what are their prices like? ( want to be prepared haha)
 
Are you going to have it insured, plated, certified, etc?

I am in Mississauga, I can ride it up to Barrie for you if you give me a ride back (in a car or truck).

I dont have any vehicle, unfortunately :( i will need to get it plated yes and i am already making arrangements for certification and insurance. Does this all need to be done before i take possession of the bike or can i take it once i get it to my place?

Do you have a "conditional M2" ? I.e. you passed a M1-exit course, but you're M2 is not valid yet ?

If so, just ride it home on < 80 km/h roads (after you transfer the ownership, get a license plate). More fun than the boring straight highway anyway.

If you don't have the "cond M2", then have you inquired about insurance ? Without a course-pass + "conditional M2", most insurance companies won't cover you, and therefore you're not going to be able to get a license plate (need an insurance policy to get the plate).

I am doing the course shortly before i get the bike. so that will work out perfectly! i will still try to arrange a ride down to meet up with whoever ends up towing it. That way i can personally give the guy the mioney and check the bike out and make sure he isnt selling me something bad.
 
Make sure you have insurance sorted and you ride the bike or have someone you can trust, test ride it before handing over cash to make sure it's all ok.

I dont have any motorcycle friends so ill have to just test it out myself. I may see if anyone on here will be close by and would be willing to meet me there and give me a second opinion. Would you suggest setting the insurance up before i even get it to my place? Or right after? ( i can always cancel it if i dont end up bringing it home....)
 
Just make sure you are aware of the actual cost, etc. If you have the VIN, they can have it set up to start 12:01am the day you pick it up. Check with them for details.

Wait you still haven't viewed the bike? Do you know the guy you're buying it off or is this a kijiji/autotrader purchase? Because you should really see the bike before doing anything.

Legally if it's going to be ridden on the road it needs to be insured. Towing you won't need it. I believe there is a limited window (same day?) to cancel a policy before you get any charges.

You only need a plate and insurance if you are going to ride the bike.
If you are transporting it via truck or trailer to Barrie, you don't need either.
When you are ready to ride it, get it safetied, insured and transfer the ownership then.
You may if you wish transfer the ownership at once when you buy it without a safety, but the registration will be for an "unfit" vehicle.
And that involves a separate visit to Service Ontario.
 
What kind of bike? Have you called for an insurance quote yet? That's essential before laying out a dime to buy a bike that you may find you can't actually afford to insure - there's lots and lots of horror stories about that exact scenario. It's a cardinal rule with new riders and motorcycles to call for quotes first!

As for getting it home, rent a Uhaul trailer - they have motorcycle specific trailers for this sort of thing. If you don't have a vehicle to tow the trailer, find a friend who will help you out.

Pretty sure CAA won't tow it unplated, so that isn't an option for you.
 
you can ride hwy 27, and personally i like it better than the 400.
lately ive been taking 27 south (but take 400 when going north) because of the construction at 400 and 401, you can easily end up in 20-30 min of a traffic jam where as if you just take 27 south its only about 10 min longer to the 427

I wonder about this statement. I know in my trailer because I have no insurance on my trackbike that IF I get into an accident (let's say someone t-bones me on the way to track) the contents are insured EXCEPT for bike. Insurance explained it as a non road ready vehicle.

However if I was transporting a riding lawn mower my house insurance would cover it, but again I inquired and my TB is not covered in this case. ****ed if you do, ****ed if you don't I guess.

I'd get someone who is licensed to transport bikes (commercial insurance) , or insure it before anyone else rode it.

This is a great idea. I bought a bike recently and didn't do this and now my bike is sitting for a month waiting on parts to repair things due to not checking out the bike and a poor safety. If buying used, get someone to check it out to make sure its mechanically sound.

Yeah you are right, your car insurance will not cover a bike that you are towing or hauling, same with an ATV or really anything else that they offer separate insurance for. You have to have the towed vehicle insured as well if you want coverage out of an accident. But you dont *need* insurance just to tow or transport it legally, like, a cop wont pull you over and ask for insurance papers for the towed vehicle since its not being driven.

For the cost of renting a trailer you can get it towed by motolimo, it will be around 100-150 bucks, you can call him for a quote before he comes out. CAA *might* tow it if you have CAA (This guy doesnt have a car though, so probably doesnt), depends on the driver, youre supposed to only be able to tow things you own but most guys will hook up anything because they get paid out either way.
