How Prevalent is Racism in Our Society?

Not really, people don't emmigrate because of their neighbours, they emmigrate because of political climate, economy, pollution, a lot of things. its not about leaving behind your leisure activities.
If you emigrated to Japan for work or something, and you found a bunch of guys from Canada that play hockey, wouldn't you think that was cool? I would play.

I actually avoid the cultural events... because i know the ignorance of my fellow people and don't wanna be a part of things that may transpire. 99.999999% of my friends are not from my culture.

One could try to underestimate the persistence of paranoia, but ah.. I understand employers sometimes feel pressure to turn down a better qualified white dude simply because his hiring can be seen as nonequal. It;s not alright to dismiss though.

But really, why do the Italian construction companies only higher Italians? Their qualification for that job goes beyond what most people think. The relatability to others in the company, the language, etc etc.

Anyhow, look no further then this forum to see racism as rather prevalent in our society. Somehow even the insurance threads degrade to a bunch of pussyfoots crying "I won't specify which race, but it's that race which causes problems." It;s hard to think that you truly believe that you are alleviating yourself of a bigoted viewpoint... you bring shame to your family. /end short rant

Tell that to the next "equal opportunity employer" you come across if you don't belong to one or more of the employment equity groups.

As for the immigrants, I don't care what they do on their own time, as long as they learn enough of our language/laws/customs to function in the society.

Signed: Immigrant

I am not really talking about cultural events. I am pointing out that just because someone immigrated and still enjoy bubble tea and speaking their native language doesn't make them racist, nor any less of a Canadian.

Because there is nothing in those activities that are affront to fundamental values of Canadian and other Western societies.

Only time when I'm against this is when it's done in the professional environment. I agree with whoever the best person for the job is should be hired. Right now the biggest detractor of that is people who get in via references or hookups. Most people are hired because they were referred by someone and not because they are the best person for the job.

People don't want to earn anything anymore... they prefer to be handed it to them.

I would never give someone a reference if they didn't deserve it, that would make me look bad. And if anyone had a bunch of jobs before and don't have a bunch of excellent references to show for it... maybe they aren't the best person for the job.

I always hated those race quota with the government, where they need a certain amounts of black, asian, pink dude, women etc. Because of that I could get a job more easily in Ontario than in my hometown. And it's not because I'm black or whatever, it's because my language is a minority. I almost laugh in the face of the employer when he told me that.

Just don't forget that racist come not only in visual, but in language. A lot of time I've been discriminated because English isn't my mother tongue. Not for job, but for stupid stuff, like restaurants, outdoor activities etc. I didn't read all of the thread, but don't put racist joke, and real racist in the same basket. I know a lot of people saying really bad racist joke, but in real life, they just don't give a **** about races.

I agree with your message, except that racism IS based on race (hence the name). It is a form of discrimination, as is favoring someone based on language, sex, religion, etc...

Who cares if they only want to hang out with someone of their own creed. Are Christians bad because they only hang out with Christians? What about goths? Do you expect goths to hang out school choir? What about motorcycle riders?

Who the **** even cares what someone else does. I have a million and one things to do that I frankly couldn't care what you did or whom you did it with.

Remember, our charter is founded upon freedom to choose to whom we want to associate with and to what degree.

if they are not willing to hang out with and get to know other races, then miscommunication, misunderstanding and ignorance towards other races would be unavoidable.

Someone mentioned earlier that they noticed that some minority people like to play "racist" cards. I would say some of them might be manipulating, and some of them might genuinely feel that way since they tend to victimize themselves whenever they get criticized. And this self victimization and misunderstanding very often come from the fact that they are not willing to open up and blend into the society, and they are not willing to get to know other people or educate other people about their own race.

Speaking of the self victimization from my own experience, many years ago when i just came to Canada, one time our ESL school (in London) was gonna take us to Toronto. The teacher was preping us and telling us the route and everything. He told us that we were not gonna go to China Town. and for some reason, i just intuitively yelled out "is it discrimination?" the teacher was shocked for a second and then explained calmly to me "no it's not. it's just too far from where we plan to go this time." I felt super embarrassed afterwards. some time Last year, at Toronto Pearson Airport, i was waiting for my luggage. a Chinese woman (i could tell she was very "fresh") was elbowing and pushing from behind trying to get hers. i blocked her and let a gentleman through since he was in front of her and was supposed to get his luggage first. and i heard this woman talking in Chinese loudly and furiously to her friends about how bad and betraying I was for blocking her and helping a white guy. i have experienced/seen/heard a lot more and I'm sure that many of us have experienced ignorant people and misunderstanding no matter which race you are.

if you are close minded, all you see is gonna be "me" and "you" when interacting with other races; if you are willing to open up, there would only be "us", and the whole societly would have a lot less problems. That's why I do care and do have problems with people who are only willing to hang out with their own races. oh and i do feel the same towards religious people who don't accept "other kinds".

I've been pretty lucky in the places I've worked. My past employers have seen past skin colour and recognized each of us by our skill. We had Guyanese, Trinidad, Ethiopian, Indian, Jamaican and Somalian folks. I learned a lot from them

I loved the lunch times too, everyone had lunches from their cultures and sometimes we'd share. Now at my new workplace, its more of an office type job. Although less co-mingling of other cultures, my current team loves eating culturally diverse foods.

Although we all make racist jokes, none of us (at my work) are really racist. I feel pretty comfortable being a visible minority. Even when I went out of town like Muskoka or Bracebridge, people were really nice there too. Guess I was pretty lucky. Elementary school was a little different though.

I get your point and sympathize that while it may be wrong and not in the best of society as a whole, we cannot force others to change their social ways to reflect ours. If they want to hang out with one ethnicity or group then let them. Forcing your views that everyone should hang out with mixed is just as wrong as the person who is only hanging out with one race.

For the greater of good of society is played by the majority. Remember back in the day when native kids were taken from their parents and put in boarding christian schools in the prairies? They were being assimilated into white society. Canada is not about assimilation, it's about acceptance. You have to accept people for who they are and what their views.

Quotas piss me off. I see those as just as bad as the supposed inequalities they are trying to rectify. Look at NSERC, there's a specific grant available for women in science that is obviously not available for men. The inequality in science is easily working it's way out yet it's way easier now for a new postgrad to get a job as a researcher purely based on gender because of this. The other quotas are just as bad. The only brightside is that we're such a PC country that you could easily self identify as a black, one legged, french speaking, transvestite single mother of 5 to get a job (even if you're a white heterosexual bloke) and if anyone disagreed you could call it harrassment and get the human rights office involved.

As for me..I hate everyone, even my own countrymen.........................................but especially the Welsh.

i would never force my views to other people and i respect their decisions. a lot of my chinese friends are closed minded this way but I never really said anything since it's a somewhat sensitive topic and it's not my business afterall. there's little for me to do besides ranting my frustration out on this forum i guess.

I understand where you're coming from. I agree. I think we should be a society that allows open sex amongst everyone all the time. That way we would all become one colour :P

You want to see hate in Canada? Move to Vancouver, don't mention where you're from, make some friends, then eventually tell them your from Toronto and just watch how quickly you get shunned.

I grew up in Victoria.... One of my highschool friends was from here. I’m thinking it was you that was perhaps the issue, not your hometown.

I think racism is an issue here. Not towards the black people as much as the other races now. And it exists in all forms as prejudice and racism (to me it’s the same stupid crap). My uncle lives in a town in NS where if your heritage isn’t from Scotland you get treated poorly. It’s gotten so bad they are moving as soon as the house sells which they are having a hard time with because no realtor will help him (he’s not Scottish) and no one will buy because they won’t deal with him for the same reason. He’s basically waiting for another outsider to move into town.

Now I will say, having travelled in the US quite a bit….. It is NOWHERE near as bad as in the states…. Ask Gilligan about having a hard time getting a hair cut at a barber because he was in a black barber shop and he’s white. And the attitude you get from the black because they are soooo used to being **** on, and how amazing the flip from bitchy to nice when they learn your Canadian.

And what I get a real kick from (in the I think its cool kind of kick) is I work with a lot of South Africans. 4 are white, 2 are black and 1 is Asian (yep with an African accent too). Two speak Swahili, one of the white guys and one of the black.

Gee I wonder if the organization behind this government funded???

On the prairies the Ukrainians who have been there a century or so think they are better than later arrivals (DPs) The Polish look down their noses at the Ukies and vice versa.
People of colour think they're better if they don't have as much colour.
A friends son (White) was dating a black girl and she got hassle from black guys but it was OK for them to date white girls.
I knew a white guy who was born and raised in Jamaica, complete with accent. Wonder if he had employment issues?

So exactly how do we legislate this?

My favourite line from the movie 'Something New' is this:

"Everyday I'm reminded I'm Black. The only time you know you're White, is when you're in a room full of Black people".

This, my friends, is a fact and a reality.

Racism is alive and well in Canada. To believe or think otherwise is, IMHO, to be naive.

Definitely true & then some in my case. I probably wouldn't date an asian chick unless she was mixed (or diluted hahaha). I actually grew up with my own culture/race...and as I became more "Canadian", I just couldn't relate to them anymore. I used to consider race one of my defining features, but now I don't (although other people might).

I think the dumbest thing is when people ask for a hook up on things just 'cause you're the same race. I would be a little more understanding if it wasn't Canada and there were only a handful of us in the country.

I actually left my first high school because of the segregation. Blacks were with blacks, white were with whites, asians were with asians, etc.

But I've been for Pho downtown with black friends and gotten ****** service every single time.
