How long do gloves last?

I know this might be a bit of a loaded question.

Anyhow I have had a pair of Allstar leather gloves with armor etc since I start riding about 4 years now. But the left glove has started to show some real wear. With a seam on the finger splitting and another near thumb/hand area. Plus sometimes after wearing them I have a bit of a black stain on my hands, probably because I got caught in a few downpours over the years. Otherwise they have been great fit wise and comfort just not sure if this normal wear and tear or they are not that great of a glove.

Looking forward to hearing responses. Was digging through old moto gear yesterday and I left the helmets and gloves in the shed. ******* mice tore into my gloves from Velocity and now they’re useless. Didn’t touch the helmets, but the gloves are shot.

Jimmy doesn’t have any stock, and I loved those gloves. None on Kijiji.

sorry for hijack.

4 years is a really long time, I suppose the ultimate test is a crash test, if you found the protection and comfort adequate, id say they were good

Depends on the gloves...
My primary pair of leather gloves are coming up on their 13th season.
Top side they're a little faded, but other than that... they're great.

Depends on mileage (usage), type of usage (expect gloves worn at track or when moving around on bike a lot to wear faster), amount of time in rain, etc.
My Astar GP Pro's are pretty much done now at around 6yrs old. Have about 25 or more track days on them and 50,000km of road riding. In the same time I also retired my EVS NYC shorties last year with similar mileage minus the track days on them.
This reminds me that I'm due to order some new gauntlets.

I think it's all in how well sized it was to begin with, and how well you took care of them. My 10-year old Sidi Vortices still look brand new except for the soles (and Sidi sells replacement soles). My Alpinestars touring boots were still looking almost brand new at 4 years old, but last summer I lent them to a friend visiting for 2 months, and in that time frame he managed to make them look all ratty. Afte one ride, I saw how he removed them - he undid the velcro and zipper with his hands, then used the soles of each boot to step on the other and pry it loose so that he could kick them off. Didn't blink twice if he was doing this all on a sandy or muddy surface. I have Teknic gloves from the 90's that were still good when I stopped using them in 2010. Only issue with them was the kangaroo palms were drying out because I used to sweat in them and never bothered to moisturize them.

Some of it also depends on your sweat's pH.

Seems like my wife has really acidic sweat, she goes through gloves twice as fast as me, the leather on the fingertips and palm seem to wear out super fast on all her gloves.

I have a feeling this might have something do with womens gear being designed differently(my wife complains about womens pants always lacking pockets etc)

Maybe that guy from snell can pop in here for an answer?

I think I still have a pair that I bought at McBride's.

Once a seam starts to go, or they wear through in a spot, they're done as riding gloves for me.

Wow wasn't expecting all the replies this late in the day. Thanks all. (y)

Judging from everything said, I am doing pretty good. To be honest I don't really maintain them in any way, just wear them and leave them in the garage (no issues with mice). They fit perfectly which is why I use them all the time over my other pairs. So they should be ok for this season before seriously considering another pair.

There’s a couple of things..some already mentioned like sweat but it’s also the thickness of the leather obviously. Thicker isn’t always better if you want to maintain the feel. Many moons ago when I did some glider flying the pilots had super thin leather gloves for grip and touch (as the bubble canopy gliders got hot) and these would wear out pretty fast. My favourite summer gloves are a bit like that, armoured on the backs and heel of the hand but the fingers were thinner. They wore out fairly fast but I still got a few seasons out of them.

I've had my JR gloves for over 10 years, seam went on one of the fingertips last year and I just carefully sewed it up to finish the season. Just purchased new JR gloves (solid + mesh) on sale at GP Bikes.

I have a pair of these, not sure when he first started selling them, but I've definitely had them a long time. They have held up quite well

Awesome gloves. That’s why I’m so upset about it. But my fault for leaving them there. Funny the mice didn’t touch my wife’s leather gloves. Just mine.

Somewhere I read that women sweat more from their palms than men do percentage wise. I read it on the internet.

My first pair of gloves lasted it seemed forever but towards the end it must have been dirt holding them together. I got caught in a torrential rainstorm in Louisiana and they fell apart, curled up and died.

I have two pairs of these also from "the beginning" and I still race in them. Kyle goes through gloves every year or so, doing pretty similar amounts of riding. I think we've come to the conclusion between the two of us that he sweats way more which is why they don't last as long.
