How HTA 172 affects State farm insurance

Just so you know, if you were convicted 1.5 year ago you should already know what they'd be charging you ;)

State farm just found out about my friends major conviction, in year 4 out of the 5 (that it stays on his record), and they BACK DATED their charges and charged him extra for the 4 years he's already paid (by adding $4,500 onto his 5th year premiums) :(

Like someone said, best to call an agent other than your own and "ask" hypothetically what they'd do (drop you, increase your rate, etc.). Sometimes they even lie (told my friend they have 1st accident forgiveness, he filed a claim, whops, nope, sorry. Wow). If they don't know about it now, pray they don't find out about it in the next 5 years.

Good luck.

The TICKET was given 1.5 years ago. court dates etc.... took time.
the Conviction is going to be on next renewal. but thanks for input. i definitely don't plan on hiding it from insurance.
mostly want to have an idea of what to expect. i guess mentally and financially try prepare for what's coming. :(

My friends 1 major (he already had one minor like you) added $1000/yr to his ZX10 with state farm.

what is considered a major exactly?

FYI - as my statefarm broker told me. They don't always check abstracts year over year as it costs them money. Meaning, if you are lucky, they won't pull your abstract for the next renewal and your rates will not change. If so, do not make any changes to your policy as they will definitely pull one at that time.

This is the first i've ever heard of the company backdating the charges. I don't believe that will hold up very well if you decided to challenge the decision upwards and outright not pay.

Let us know how it goes.

What do you mean by backdating?

If you got convicted 2 years ago, and your insurance never went up because they didn't find out, and they find out now, they will charge you extra for the last two years, in the amount of whatever it woulda went up, had they found out at the time. Backdating your insurance increase charge :(

That does not happen. If your policy renews and they don't pull an mvr that's that. An insurance company has 60 days to re-rate, that's it. There's no backdate.

Has this happened to you?

I don't see how they can do this. They can threaten to drop you when they find out, but not backdate the charges.

It's a statutory condition of the oap1. It's illegal to back date.

I have 4 minors with SF. 1 just got dropped, but my renewal came up when I had 4. They didn't check.

I made the stupid mistake of quoting car insurance for my wife. SF pulled my abstract....told me they found the 4 tickets (one of them being 49over - a reduced 172). They said "You know, we should drop you, but we won't. Your wife's quote is blah blah blah".

2 More renewals to cross my fingers through! Wish me luck.

PS I think 49over is a minor for SF. Differs from insurer to insurer as I understand it.

A good relationship with your broker might just pay off.

If it's after 60 days from your renewal they can touch your policy until your next renewal. Tickets and accidents can only be added or removed at renewal.
