How fast am I really going?

So when stopped, it says 5 km/h? *sigh*

no need to be mean.

But mikbusa is correct. its a % correlation, not a set speed difference.

What type of bike do you ride? My 250 is definitely 10% high from actual speed. I checked it with a GPS and : 80 is 72, 100 is 90, 120 is 108...

I ride an 81 Honda GL500 Silverwing. I am the 3rd owner of this bike in my family. I would have thought the other 2 guys would have mentioned something about it lol

Why would they - it's the norm for motorcycles and to a lesser degree cars. Certainly not worth any angst.

Then I'm sure there's a specific forum for that bike and they'll have an accurate speedo error thread somewhere. Or just grab a GPS and let it run while you measure against your speedo...just don't look down for too long!

I recently tested mine. It has a 6-7 Percent difference between speedo and gps-calculated speed.

Also changing sprocket sizes will affect some bikes. It depends where the reading comes from.
My bike reads from the transmission, sprocket size change will affect me.
My previous bike took speed readings from front wheel, sprocket change would not affect.

Changing from stock tire sizes will affect both sources, but the difference will be negligible.

My owners manual even says the speedometer is 8 percent higher than actual. I don't understand why they do this on motorcycles.

Liability. All speedos have a margin of error. If you were going faster than indicated and crashed, some mouthpiece in the US will sue for bazillions. So they play it safe.

Both my V-Stroms were off by about 8%. The 2006 was easily fixed by changing the analogue speedo faceplate. The 2012 is digital and driven off the final drive so I could change it via a sprocket change or by a speedo healer. I used to worry about it but usually use the GPS anyway.

yes..my bike is soo fast it thinks its moving even when its stopped....

looking at the video quickly and seeing the speedo in some clips of the vid it appeared to be off by ABOUT 5km consistently. yes, im aware it is more likely a % that is is off by rather than being a fixed KM/hr that it is off by.

That's the same reason why our cars in North America have next to no towing capacity now. The exact same models in Europe are usually rated 3x higher, if they even rated it for anything in North America.

always amusing when a newbie or friend of newbies brags their stock (insert 600cc sportbike here) does 280km/h

It's not like they're far off. They will do 265-270 give or take.

This is exactly why. Think of people like the bimbo who sued McDonald's because her coffee was too hot. She's a waste of oxygen mind you but she still sued.

Sent from my commodore 64 on dial up

My ex had a CBR 250 with a wildly optimistic speedo. She would only ride at the speed limit based on her speedo. Needless to say, many people crowded her tail flashed their lights at her. She finally got angry with me for always telling her to F'n speed up! Don't ride with the intercom open when riding with a slow poke.

They had been repeatedly warned that their coffee was dangerously hot and had already been told to lower it and refused. She actually only wanted her medical bills covered because she had to pay thousands for surgeries to treat her third degree burns to her groin. A jury awarded her more.

I might be remembering that incorrectly.

Yeah open intercom..lol could this be a reason she is now an EX???lol

I bet it was her open mindedness and willingness to experiment that ended it all.

Maybe they need to revisit that...
