how does the red light cam take a pic of the vehicle before the white line?

To me, the obvious question (which I don't believe anyone's asked) regarding the intersection where the OP's Mom turned: Is it a corner that's signed 'No turn on red'? If it is, it no longer matters whether she stopped or not, only that she proceeded through on a red.

its at don mills / finch. i dont think there's a sign like that.

I'm not from the area, so I don't know about what signs are there/not there but if there is none, then I'm gonna hazard a guess and say it's because she was proceeding through with out coming to a full stop. However.....that may give her an out in that she can say she came to a full stop before the light turned red in anticipation of it changing...then she proceeded through. Not sure if that would work as a defence :dontknow: I guess it'd be worth a shot if she has nothing else to defend herself. Is she going to fight it?

The camera will not fire if you stop before the stop bar and then make a right turn. The camera also notes the vehicle speed when the camera was activated; it is printed on the ticket. That way it is fairly easy to determine if the vehicle came to a stop before proceeding.

Just talked to my dad as he hired someone to take care of it and was straight out told that it can't go to insurance as they can not prove who was driving at the time:) Like Malks is saying, just like a parking ticket.

OMFG if I hear someone talk about demerit points one more time... (not directed at you nfq) jeeeebus!

Sitting in court the other day, this lady goes up and takes the "plea deal" and pleads guilty to three of her five offenses on the ticket, reduced fine to $50 all in, and no demerit points. She sits down beside me after her plea to get her paperwork together. She says:
"Wow, so glad they got rid of the points. Insurance company said if I got even one more they would cancel me!"
"Ummm, your insurance company was talking about convictions, not points, and you just got three of them!"
She FREAKS out and runs up to the judge saying she wants to take back her plea, she didn't know what she was agreeing to, etc. Security escorted her out of the courtroom.

Man it irks me how people think demerit points have anything to do with anything :(

If you ever need to worry about demerit points, you'll already know really well what they are!

Is that even valid to give a red light ticket when the person turns right? It will probably get thrown out.

Yes, it is valid. You are required to stop, before the white line (or prior to the corner or crosswalk, depending upon what street markings might be present), prior to making a turn. If you cannot see around the corner, in order to make a safe turn, then you must stop before the line and then advance to a point where you CAN see around the corner, then stop, and proceed when the way is clear.

Yes, one of my pet peves too when people don't stop with out making sure it's clear to go!!! I do it every time and recently had a friend pass me and went through the red and made a right when I stopped...two no no's lol

Malks explanation of how they work seems to have some holes. If it uses the time lapse between passing the two sensors to determine an infraction is going to occur, how can it then tell the camera to fire and take a picture of the vehicle as it passes the stop bar, when it has already passed the second sensor?

In the pics that were sent to my dad, they had a pic of him behind the line first then the others. So maybe they just take pics hoping someone will go through?

don't complain...

Calgary has speed through green radars also... you get a speeding ticket if you speed through the intersection so you don't get the red light ticket...

now that is *^$%&^(*^&*^%$!

Got off lucky if it was just the traffic cam that caught her. I turned right on a red with my car before and I got pulled over by a cop. Not only got the $325 fine but also the record on my license and the 3 demerit points.

Yeah... I've had people honking their horns at me for making a full stop at a stop sign or a right turn on red light. Just makes me want to wait a little longer.

This is why people need to stop at red lights before making a turn. If it were "anyone" on a 600 or above, they'd probably have been through the intersection faster than I.

There are actually two sensor loops before the stop bar and another after the stop bar. The first two determine if you have stopped as required. If you cross the second sensor too soon after the first, it fires the first shot. If you pass the third sensor then the computer knows you have crossed the stop bar and finishes the sequence. All of this is not a problem if you stop at the proper location before entering the intersection.

Watch when your driving in the wonderful city of Hamilton. It has a wonderful timed lighting system that helps the flow of traffic ( if you drive the speed limit you can usually go from one end of town to the other with out stopping ) and also the enviornment by not making you stop, idle and start again as well as wear on your brakes.

OH BUT WAIT they like to take the lights out of sequence ( especially on burlington street ) at certain times of the day (JUST the ones with RED light Cameras ) this way they can make a few extra bucks off the public while putting people at risk who are anticipating the lights to be in sequence as usual with minimal traffic and surprising them. I would like to know if there has ever been any major or serious accidents due to thischoice of the city to alter the timing of the lights to interfere with the flow of traffic.

I have to say the first time I noticed this I was shocked as I was always so impressed by the thought that went into Hamitlons traffic managment system and the progressive way that it helped and protected both drivers and the enviornment.

Never in your life have I agreed with anything you've said...

Until now.

Scary **** a brewin', must be getting close to Halloween.

If the cameras work on inductive loops, then does that mean bikes are immune?

As we know most intersection sensors dont detect bikes...

Why not?
Perhaps turn on red is not allowed at this intersection .
I wonder if OP mum actually did te more typical roll through rather than stopping?

That sure as heck makes it sound like it'll show up on your driving record :(

Like photo radar you could argue it was someone else driving- therefore these are just cash penalties, and not points on driver licence .
