How do you deal with generally unpleasant people?

To start it off, let me tell a story of my FIRST encounter with a road rager. I have only been riding for 4 months so far.

Earlier today I had an incident where I was purposely cut off twice by a guy who didn't want me to pass him on a two lane road. I was on the right lane with the said driver in front and the lane to the left was open so I figured I'd just pass the car. Nope, he didn't like that. He immediately swerved over and nearly hit my front, so I slow down and then try to pass him on the right lane. He didn't like that either and decided to swerve back into the right lane almost taking me out again. From that point, I just simply slowed down from there and let him just go, not wanting to risk my life and all.

Now, fast forward 20 minutes. I'm at a store, happens to be where I work at, to pick up a few items. This guy enters the store, comes up to me and says "Hey."

I turn to him and he goes off saying "People like you are a**holes, riding around recklessly. You guys are the reason why insurance is so bad for us, I hope you crash one day." At this point I was more bewildered then mad. I hadn't done anything but try to pass him at 10km/h above speed limit of 50km/h.

I tell him "You cut me off twice, I backed off because you're a dangerous driver. What's your problem?".

He then goes to say "I'll kick your bike over, how about that?" after that he simply stomps off out the door and gets into his cage and peels off.

I didn't get his plate, but I can remember the car easily (Aquagreen Honda Civic approx. 1996 production year. Billabong sticker, white writing, on bottom middle of back windshield) and the face of the driver (Caucasian, Tanned, curly hair, skinny, about 5'9", had typical white sunglasses on top of head) due to the incident. I let it go earlier, but I feel like if I ever see the guy again, I may lose my cool on him.

This all happened in Aurora, ON for anyone that care. Just so you can avoid the driver if you ever encounter them.

How do you guys deal with extreme road ragers, and generally unpleasant people? Especially people who imply they want to see you dead.

TL;DR - Tried to pass guy at 60km/h, cut me off twice. Confronted me later, threatened to kick bike over from road raging. Generally stayed calm through the events. How do you deal with situations like this?

Ask him what was wrong with passing him at 60 km/h in a 50 zone.

By 2-lane road do you mean?

Or was it a 4 lane with 2 lanes each direction?

Anyhow, in both cases he's stupid for trying to cut you off. You're not endagering him if theres no incoming traffic and he doesnt have to change his speed.
Personally if he had tipped my bike, id've keyed his car from front to rear fender
Amounts to the same amount in repairs. Show him how stupid it is to attack people's property

Kudos to you for letting him drive off though

You have accurately described the wild Civicus Douchebagus. Not much to worry about, despite their poor driving skills and atrocious taste in music. Laugh it off. You ride a motorcyle and he's got a lame econobox with stickers.

He intentionally cut you off twice.
Let him drive his own speed. FOR GOD'S SAKE DO NOT TRY TO PASS AGAIN FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY.

Take note of his license plate and make a report to the police about a dangerous driver.
You could also take note of his license plate, car make / model and call 911 about a potentially intoxicated driver if and only if you feel this is the case.

You're on a bike.
He's in a car.
Mass indicates he wins.

Back off, stay alive.
Make life miserable for him via police if it's warranted.

compared to all those russian dashcam vids on you tube... you handled it pretty well

I legit think I know that guy...was this in the Bloomington/Bayview area? If it's who I'm thinking of he's a first class chump and also a huge vagina.

As far as dealing with road ragers, the assault charge is ALMOST never worth it. If he's cutting you off and being a jerk what you did was the appropriate thing. As far as the "confrontation" afterward, you should just let them vent, act like they have something hanging between their legs and then just walk away. Most won't do a single thing and for those that do the response is clear.

I can handle someone doing something stupid, like people not checking their blind spots when changing lanes, pulling out in front of me and driving slow as ****, not knowing what the word yeild means... You know, the regular stupid crap that bad drivers do. Usually when that happens I'll just flip em off, or stare them down and be on my way.

However, as with your case, when people knowingly drive like ******** then it just pisses me off to no end. In my oppinion you handled it extremely well. I was sort of in your situation once and I'm really not proud of the way I handled it, not that I regret what I did. I probably just won't do it again :p

Sounds like you started a side mirror collection

it's like trying to explain to people that you can pass on double solid yellow line

edit: just did a quick search cauz I had this conversation with some bikers and it is illegal to cross double yellow line in Alberta but not Ontario go figure I learned something new no wonder I get honked for doing a u-turn and riding the street car tracks which turns out to be the above ground subway

I typically ride around wearing my steel toe/heel boots. If I see a car in the Newmarket/Aurora area that matches that description, I'll bring home his mirrors for you as a souvenir.

I have yet to encounter a cager driving that recklessly, but I await the day that someone does **** like that to me.

same here all the years I've been riding I never get a driver not allowing me to pass. I usually get the ones that want to race me either in their car or motorcycles. I just get a chuckle out of it everytime.

And non riders keep asking me why I wear my GoPro EVERYWHERE, even in my cage. It's stories like this that I remember every time I curse having to charge it, or running back into the house because I forgot it.

Stay safe, it's not worth unless you're a ninja.

Take the first corner and leave. Never worth it.

This is exactly what I would do ^. When I'm riding my motorcycle, I will always pull over to the right (if and when safe to do so) if I don't feel comfortable with the way someone is driving.

Honestly, I question the mentality and maturity level of some motorcycle riders when they indicate what they would do (or have done).

Hey OP,

That's pretty twisted for someone to follow you to you destination. Keep a sharp lookout for your bike for awhile. People nutters enough after 20 minutes to attempt to re-escalate a confrontation are something to keep an eye on. At least the car is easy to spot.

I've been pushed to the centre line, and almost into oncoming traffic by a woman driving a convertible whom decided to pass me on the right, into the lane I was occupying. She then made a left at the next light, not a couple hundred feet up the road.

They're aggressive, arrogant, and have chip on shoulder. Not worth the **** on the bottom of you shoe.

Without mentioning the speeds involved, report him to police/Roadwatch. In future hang back and let the idiot go, or turn off and take another route. Reason doesn't win a fight with an idiot, who has a two tonne weapon.

In these cases you really should get his license plate number, just in case he really does do what he says. You could document the issue, just in case anything happens.

There are so many psychologically unstable, overly stressed people on the road, many with anger issues. In a car or bike, there is little to gain with a confrontation. You will not calm them down or change their minds, and you expose yourself to unnecessary risk for no real benefit. They also have a 2 ton weapon which they can use to squish you. Regardless, this is more their problem, and less yours. You are the better person for deescalating.

Amazing how many people feel the need to endanger our lives. I guess they don't realize/care that their antics can/could really hurt someone.... Handled it well, keep driving, next time note the plate # and report him/her, backing off is the right thing to do...you won't win.
