HOV - HOT lanes - what do you think?

So they are going to sell permits for single drivers to use the lanes.
I thought the purpose was to move traffic along faster and provide cars with 2+ people an express lane.
At the end of the day, a single driver will pay to sit in the lane they used to drive in for free.
Basically you are about to pay in the lane that you once used for free...lol

Pay to drive in the HOT lane?

Sure. Already do that with the 407. I couldn't be bothered to go sit on the 401 so pay it is.

We paid for em, pay to maintain them and will pay if we want to use them. What are gas taxes for again?

No, the single driver will pay to drive in the HOT lane.
Vehicles that can currently drive in the HOV lanes can still do so for free.
The key (as always) will be enforcement.

Yes, I was trying to say the single driver used to have the HOT for free.
How does it help congestion and flow of traffic when the only difference is the Govt. now collects a fee to allow the single driver to use the HOV/HOT lane...lol

Single drivers could nave been fined for using the HOV lanes. Under the new system they can pay a fee and avoid the fines. THEORETICALLY

I assume some transponder deal but a yearly / monthly pass might be simpler. Transponders might not have enough lane definition. I can't see where a per trip system would work as on the 407.

Enforcement? Pull over a car or two on the DVP or GE and see how that improves traffic flow.

No, because the HOT lane is currently the HOV lane. So if you don't pay or have at least 2 people in your car you still have the same number of lanes available to you then right now.

IMHO this is just a cash grab, but this will allow more people to use the current HOV lanes taking them out of the other lanes.

Exactly....and what if I have my family in my car on occasion...I don't have to pay...so it needs to be per trip...it'll be a mess as usually LOL

The only thing makes sense is a monthly or yearly pass STUCK TO THE VEHICLE.

You can legally use the HOT lanes solo.

With others in the car you are paying for usage that you would normally get free. If you car pool 4 days a week you still need a sticker for the one day a week.

Unless the sticker is removable you can't take the spouse's car and use the HOT lane.

I don't see the problem with paying for something you don't benefit from. It's like EI. If someone has 2 part time jobs they pay EI for both but collect squat if they only get laid off from one. (Sarcasm font)

If you want to use it once....you pay. It's up to you if you want to pay for HOT use. i.e. One person could be paying $1 a trip(using every day) and another $7 a trip (used once a week). If a bunch of ppl want to pay, it'll take them out of the regular lanes. Sounds good.

Would be nice if MCs could use them like when the games were on. ;)

The initial permit system on the QEW is loosely based on a Utah toll road. That state ran a pilot program on one of its highways for about four years between 2006 and 2010 using a similar permit process where drivers paid about $50 a month to access the HOT lanes.

But the minister stressed that Ontario’s HOT lane prices won’t necessarily be the same.

“We have more analysis to do over the coming months,” he said.

Utah has since installed electronic Highway 407-style tolling on the same road, he added.

Electronic tolling makes it possible to add dynamic pricing to HOT lanes — adjusting the cost to the driver according to the time of day or traffic levels. That’s something the government will talk about as it gets closer to launching the HOT lanes on Highway 427, said Del Duca.

...and with electronic tolls...HTF are they gonna know how many people are in the car

Easiest thing to circumvent.

Transparent plastic. Stick pass on it. Stick the transparent plastic with your own transparent scotch tape. And move as required.

I think HOT would've worked wonders in the first part of the pan-am games. In a situation where you have almost nobody in the lanes, im sure a bunch of people would've paid to be in those lanes.

Welcome to Ontario
where EVERYTHING based on traffic enforcement, insurance, and automobile use is simply a cash grab.

nothing to do with logic, safety or actual efficiency. enforcement officers are really just Revenue generators.

same goes for these HOT lanes.
herding people who work all day, pay mortgages and barely have time to think or to stand up for how the government is ripping them off.
people rarely have the energy or the time now to lift their heads up to see what's policy and what's going on. and so this will continue and will get worst.

Saw a news clip today
they will issue 1000 permits for now from Oakville to I forget (where the QEW splits to Brantford and Hamilton).
They NDP said this was done on purpose given the higher income bracket in those areas...lol

We paid for those roads via gas taxes and now we have to pay for our own lanes...wth

I am all for High Output Turbo (HOT) lanes, all you slow *** people with your non-turbo or low output turbo cars are pissing me off... GTF out of my way.

If it was actually $65 per month I would pay up, works for me and my commute.

Problem is you now have tons of slow @ss cars with turbos as thats what manufacturers try to do to get lower emission vehicles with "better gas mileage"

Wouldn't this sort of thing segregate the Rich from the poor?

The theory is it moves a car from the congested free lanes into the flowing pay lanes, reducing congestion overall while generating revenue.

As far as how it works, I think drivers will be able to pay for any period they want, even just a single trip, online. Their plates will be on record as having paid the toll so when there's enforcement, the officer will check the number of passengers AND also the database of toll payers (which would have to be updated live).

That would make sense but they were talking about a monthly sticker you display on the back of your car on the radio

Sent from a device using a program

The way they do it in California is that the new transponders are configurable, so you set it with the number of occupants you currently have in the vehicle. The cops also have a device that can read the number of occupants declared on the transponder so if you declare 2 and have only 1, you get a ticket.

Motorcycles are free regardless of passenger or not.

The consensus is that it's a cache grab as its not reducing cars or carbon footprint, and in general slows the HOT line down to a crawl like the other lanes.

I would imagine the cost for that infrastructure and monitoring is very expensive, a great investment for 26 miles of pavement.

Or you can just do a Larry David. Hire a hooker to accompany you as its cheaper than the fine
