House repairs

The basics? Plumbing basics (change a washer in a dripping faucet, swap out a toilet), and electrical basics (where's the breaker box, dimmer switch installation, etc), Minor carpentry (picture hanging, install a lockset). But if you're not comfortable with simple hand tools, let someone else do the work.

As others have mentioned, Home Depot and other chains have "How To" sessions most weekends, but they tend to be focussed on a single topic (to drive sales) such as laminate floor installation.

Sounds like my dad, renovated the entire house from top to bottom and i was his slave labour. Im thankful today however since i don't have to overpay someone for simple repairs.

I remember when i was about 12 a concerned neighbor came over to our house asking my dad why his son is on the roof of the house with a nail gun :lmao:

His response "He's gotta learn sometime"

At least you had a nail gun lol. It wasn't deemed a necessary tool. Same thing as the dishwasher, was pointless since I was the dishwasher. Wasn't a year after I left there was a dishwasher in the kitchen lol.

Glad I grew up renovating, we built a large garage and wired it, had a job as a framer, I roofed high rises for a summer and 2 years at a propane company that taught me a lot about gas fitting and working on furnaces/water heaters.

You can teach yourself, but the best way is to tag along with someone that knows what they are doing. And ask questions.

Best education is actually doing repairs, ideally alongside someone who has the experience. Friend of mine took a night course once because he had bought a house and wanted to learn how to repair things. I told him not to waste his time and that I'd help him with repairs and learn that way. He took it anyway and got some very basic info out of it and not much else. Over the summer we worked on a few projects together which probably taught him far more plus gave him the confidence to start projects on his own.

I've never had so much fun doing construction
