Honda reliability

My 2001 Goldwing turned over 97.000km today (i know it's low) on a ride up to Wiarton.Something finally broke! The cruise control wouldn't engage.I think it's just a dirty micro switch in the clutch lever, but it's the first time something hasn't worked with this bike.It was a long ride home with no cruise.:(
Honda builds an awesome (but boring) machine.

I've got a 1980 Honda with 76 K - still running great!

I'm always amazed how 100K is considered a lot for a bike - I've seen everything from R1's to harley's to wings with over 200k - even thumpers rolling their odometers.

Rode with a connie that's spun its odometer twice. Dude down in the southern US had 500,000 Miles (800,000 kms) on his BMW 1100 GS.

However, good on you for keeping your bike and riding it a bit - now time to get out and ride more! 10,000kms a year isn't enough!

I never had any issues when I had my '83 Goldwing 1100, other then fork seals every spring. It was a flawless bike that never let me down. Same went to my '02 CB919, rock solid dependable, never left me hanging, or had any problems I needed to bring it into the shop for.

I would think a goldwing with a 1800cc engine that is designed for touring should have no difficulty getting high mileage. That engine could power a car !

I had a nice '84 V65 Magna. Put an oil kit on it just in case. It did have an issue with shifting the gears, but I had bought it used and it was fixed under the 30 day warranty from the shop where I bought it.

I think my brother-in-law parked it out in the snow a couple of winters ago :(.

Now he wants my '01 Connie.

My 2000 Shadow 750 ACE is a couple hundred km from hitting 100K.
(I bought it with 65k three yrs ago).

I'll be changing the rear sprocket this weekend, but other than that and regular consumables (brake pads, oil, air filter, tires, etc) it has been trouble-free.

Well, be glad you don't own a Suzuki. My 2010 GSXR600 has 6200km (bought it brand new in the spring) and it's original engine had a pinhole in the crank case from factory, the "brand new" replacement* engine had a cracked valve cover from factory and now it's fan is not kicking in at random, causing it to overheat and piss its coolant every so often.

I seriously doubt it will last past the warranty period, and I'm NOT riding it hard at all.

* Forgot to mention it was the replacement engine that had the cracked valve cover. Kinda' important to set the trend of Suzuki reliability and quality control...

His name is "jsv650" ... what do you want to bet he owns a Suzuki SV650?? :) I've got 35,000km's on mine and it's been problem free.

Nicely spotted. :D My old bike was an SV650 and on some sites where croco was too short, I am svcroco. Doesn't mean I still own it though, although now I wish I did. That bike did not give me a single problem for 30k km even though I tracked it, beat on it, rode it in the rain, slush and salt. I figured a GSXR would be a perfect replacement. Boy, was I wrong...

My 2002 F4i is currently at 98,946km. Should hit 100,000km in the next week.

Honda's amazing reliability is a myth, although for sport bikes most of the problems I experience are with the 600RR's and wiring issues. That being said alot of Honda RR bikes come into my shop that wont even start, the newest was an 08 600RR that wouldnt start with only 10,000 km on it...LOL

F4i's were bullet proof compared to other 600's in its time because while 01 R6's were pulling 15,500 RPM redlines, the 01 F4i was only 14,200...A lower revving motor is generally going to be more reliable, not just because it was made by Honda.....See OP comment "awesome (but boring) machine. "

Old generations Honda Civics had a 1.6 L engine, the newer ones are 1.7 and those cars can run or a half a million KLM's no problem. (if well maintained)

You're just not very lucky.
I have 11,000 KLM's on mine and the only problem I encountered so far was an overheating issue (only when stopped) which was caused by low coolant, once the coolant was topped up, I haven't ran into any other problems.
Mine is an '06 750 though... not sure if that makes a difference.

Bring it on, I actually work on bikes....All of them, so my comments come from having to fix these bikes and seeing their problems first hand....No manufacture makes a perfect or better bike trust me, they all have their own problems....Just because your Honda never gave you any problems, just means your lucky...Cause there are alot of other Honda owners out there that werent so lucky...I know people that had 2 600RR's, and with all those parts couldnt get one to run..LOL

Im not a big fan of the Honda line up, but I will give them this...Right now they way the Honda powerhouse network is setup, they are really above and beyond everyone else in terms of OEM parts prices and service...My local powerhouse is open till 9pm, Ive ordered parts at 6pm and they were in the next morning!

Honda car engines do have stellar reliability... the problem is that the crappy bodies they bolt them in dont seem to stand up to Canadian winters. Every Honda our family has owned has developed the dreaded rear quarter panel rot despite rust proofing.
