Hello friends,

so I've been interested in to the Yamaha for a few years now, but now we have the Honda CRF250L and it's $2000 cheaper. What do you guys think? is the Yamaha worth $2000 more over the new Honda?
anyone else in the same boat as me?:naka:

I have looked primarily at the KLX250S and the Honda, the yamaha is too expensive for me. From what I can see the Honda has more power than the Kawi but it seems that the Kawi can be "uncorked". The Honda has non adjustable suspension where as the KLX and WR is adjustable and I belive also have longer travel than the Honda. The Honda also has the lowest stand over height. All things considered I think the WR and KLX might be better offroad but it really depends on what you want to use the bike for. I dont think you can really go wrong with any of them.

The Yamaha has more power, better suspension, lighter and does everything better if that is worth the extra is up to you. I looked at the options and will probably be picking up a 2013 KTM350EXC soon, more maintenance than the Yamaha but more power and lighter again, which is worth the extra 3g over the Yamaha for me. But out of those choices the bikes are not really even comparable, the Yamaha is miles better if you ever plan on getting off road or want more power on the road.

...plus there are several "uncorking" mods for the WR to bring it up to YZ sort of power.

Steve, awesome choice! I can't wait to try it out ;)

After the comparison between both bikes I found that engine of both bikes are same and the Honda CRF 250L price is less than Yamaha WR250 R. It is the positive point with Honda CRF. I have also bought Honda CRF. I am happy with my bike, it is comfortable bike.

How do you figure this one?

You couldn't throw 2 grand worth of aftermarket stuff at the Honda and have it perform like the Yamaha.\
For me, there's value for the dollar. Yamaha thx.

I was doing some reading about this new Honda the other night and apparently the engine was pulled from the CBR250. Interesting. Also, I was thinking of the WR250F, not the WR250R. The R is totally different, lower power, higher reliability than the F. The F is essentially a YZ250F tuned differently. Still, I agree with you, omnivore, The Yamaha is well worth the extra $2000 IMO.

There are guys reliably riding the WR250 all over the continent as an adventure touring bike...to Alaska.....the Trans Amercica Trial etc. I have yet to read of one failure or anything like that. Other than the crazy high 37" seat height.

Why yes there is. Samantha and I recorded our 3 month journey across America on the Trans America Trail. http://Www.motohobos.wordpress.com

I rode a Yamaha WR 250 R with not one issue except wearing the rubber off the tires. It was a blast on and off road. It'll keep up on the highway but it's not fun, kind of a waste of its talents. I never uncorked it and fully loaded it could've used a little more power. I plan to make the changes before our next adventure into the Mojave.

The WR250R seems like an interesting bike. It would seem it's the only dual sport (and I use that term loosely) that comes anywhere close to ktm's lineup. No other manufacturers make a dual sport thats more orientated to dirt as opposed to road.

I have the 2012 WR250R, and love the thing! I am still commuting every day to work and back. I have been on rides in the Ganaraska (I ride there and then ride there) and around the northern highways and such. Never an issue. And the maintenance schedule is the greatest of all dual sport bikes I know of. That alone is worth the extra cash. Yamaha has put higher quality components on the WR-R than any other Japanese dual sport bike. Again, another reason for the extra cost.
I have not seen another bike that would compare for both on and off road.

We had a guy a few years ago that had a bone stock WR250, I think it was an 03 (this was back in 07). All he did was strip the signals, plate etc off and raced motocross with it... Granted it was in the slowest class we have (rider is a novice), but it held it's own pretty dang good!
I actually ran in to the dude again this year after 5 years of not seeing him at the track, finally on a real MX bike... I think he was faster on the WR lol.

The WR250r is a great bike. Taken it out on highways and it's very stable until you attempt to go over 140 (I am a lightweight so this might be exacerbated). Between the KLX and the WR, the WR is better in every way. At the time I bought the WR, the ability to mod it was a pretty big deal breaker as well as the lighter weight and fuel injection.

The extra 1.5-2K is definitely worth it.

I seriously considered picking up a 2012 WR250R but ended up getting the KTM 350EXC instead. It was a tough decision. I think long term the WR is an all round better bike and will require less maintenance but I am partial to KTM even with all the quirky issues they seem to have.
