Hi/Low Beams: legal vs etiquette

I agree with you at night. They're fine during the day.

Is that what it is? I can never figure out if they actually have their highs on or if the latest Civic just has terribly designed lights. Seems Civics with their highs on are as common as the Toyotas I see on the highway with no lights on at night.

Their running lights are the highbeams at about half-power, the low beams are the far left and far right ones. If you see 4 lights turned on the moron has their high beams going. It's always the newer model civics that I see doing this crap

like many have said, running with high beams can be very dangerous. especially at intersections. oncoming cars cannot see if you have a turn signal on because you are blinding them and they will turn away from painful lights, and you will turn thinking that you have signaled and they are being a dick, when really you are just being foolish.

just focus on being more aware of whats around you, and assume they don't see you if youre not sure.

Thanks to all for the input! Kiwi's set up seems pretty sweet.

As I said earlier, I ride with low beams at all times anyway, unless no cars, rural roads, etc. But apparently in Europe sometime back (80's) it was mandatory to ride with high beams at all times. Probably because bikes didn't have crazy lighting systems, HIDs, etc.

reading challenged???..

Yes I suffer through all kinds of reading and learning difficulties but I have managed to become a productive member of society and don't require the assistance of the government ar any social "assistance".

Why does that matter? Is it normal for you to poke fun at people's challenges?

what you think modulators are waving everyone through??

Sorry I am at work and can't watch videos here.

=MacDoc] Save your high beams to change your visual profile for other drivers..... flipping them up..

I know you say to not flash the light; but if you are on low beams the change to high beams can be misconstrued as a go-ahead. I know you say "don't flash them.." right after quoted material but the change can be percieved as a go-ahead flash.

And suggesting riders leave on high-beams in any Motorcycle that has half way decent lights is a bad idea for reasons I and others have mentioned previously.

Lol

This is gotta be the best thread topic after the infamous "oil thread"

Here is my tip: DO WHAT YOU WANT!

Whatever makes you confident relaxed and calm and ride better.. Motorcycle high beams never bother me day time... My personal opinion is they are more visible. To each their own.

Section 168 says:

168. When on a highway at any time when lighted lamps are required to be displayed on vehicles, the driver of a motor vehicle equipped with multiple beam headlamps shall use the lower or passing beam when,

(b) following another vehicle within 60 metres, except when in the act of overtaking and passing.

When lamps are required is determined by s. 62:

Lamps required on all motor vehicles except motorcycles

62. (1) When on a highway at any time from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 150 metres or less, every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle shall carry three lighted lamps in a conspicuous position, one on each side of the front of the vehicle which shall display a white or amber light only, and one on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only.

Well done!
And i suppose you ride at 59 in a 60 zone and always hit your brakes on an amber light when its safe to stop :-)

Knowing the law and following it are two different things ;)

yammyr6, it is best to post blanks than to type and leave all doubt. haha. Jk.

what you ought to realize is that alot of people are affected by light. i wont get into details but really man, all you proved was a lack of foresight and an inabilty to emphatise with others. Am glad you dont have vision issues, neither do i but why do you think alot of people, asians especially wear those funny hats when its barely sunny? Lights can cause seriouss migraines and vision issues. Think a little man.

Personally, i think anyone who alters or uses a head light system for which it was not intended is a tool and ought to go to jail. We aint talking rims here. Safety? how about the lives of pedestrians and drivers that you risk? These people are just selfish, self serving fools. thats how i feel. Its one thing to upgrade a headlight, its a whole different issue when these fools start using highbeams in the day and nightime, what idiots. Use your lights as intended by the manufacturer. end of story. never mind my grammar either, this topic pisses me of. ****ing tools.

I run my low beams. I rarely use highs and when I do, it's only during appropriate times and in appropriate places. It's illegal to run them constantly.

In addition, as others have said, it's both bad etiquette and can cause vision issues for other drivers. Some people, like myself, are rather sensitive to that focused light and have to avert our eyes. This reduces your visibility to such people.

Bright oncoming light causes a vision flare, which causes you to be lost in the background of car headlights. This wasn't an issue when only motorcycles were required to run lights during the day, but it certainly is now.

Guess you've never been down a dark road at night with an oncoming car with blue HIDs high beaming you in the lane next to you.

I ride with my highs on all the time

Then you sir, are a dick.

The issue is when the person is behind you, or cresting a turn or hill, etc

Run with hi beams on and loud pipes.... Take note though the rest of the world does fine with no daytime running lights in their bikes.

That is a good point and I did take that into consideration..

If your vision is that bad though you really shouldn't be on the road driving a 4000lb cage..

I do agree with the idiots that put hid into halogen housings. **** I can't stand those idiots

"Light sensitive" doesn't equate to bad eyesight. In fact it's quite frequently the exact opposite.
