HF trailer Review/Advise.

I've also noticed that the grease fittings on the trailer is ******, so I replaced mine. The ones at Royal seem to fit fine.

Good luck!

I also had a HF grease fitting fail and spread all the grease over the inside of the wheel.

Yes exactly. So to be more specific, change the grease fittings and then forget about them. The Bearing Buddies let you apply grease through a nipple on the front of the hub, and as it uses a spring loaded plate you can get a sense of how much grease is getting put in. Also nice to know it is always under pressure and in contact with the bearings. Cheap insurance!

Not at all. I've been using my folding trailer for 2 years and over 20 TDs and you can free spin the wheels forever. I would re-check the bearings and install bearing buddies, available at Royal

Do you happen to know which one to get? And are those grease fittings on the same page better vs the ones that come with it?

I have the larger size, 1.98" axle. Kind of surprising because it is a pretty light trailer. The stock grease fittings broke off when I originally tried to use them. The RD fittings are much better but really are only plugging the hole, since you apply the grease directly into the front of each bearing buddy there is really no reason to use them.

Ah alright, thanks. Will just replace them anyways, cheap insurance. Read a story that some broke and spewed grease everywhere.

For someone that doesn't have trunk space to bring a HF trailer back, would this be possible?

Go to a MTO office and get a plate for a home built trailer.
Cross the border and buy the trailer. Build it in the parking lot. Slap your new plates on it. Head over to Home Depot and get them to cut a piece of plywood to fit.
5 hours later drive back with your car and trailer and declare everything you bought.

potential problems?

I don't know what the border guards make note of when you cross, so I wonder if they make a note that you are pulling a trailer?

From what I've heard, these trailers take a bit of time to put together even when you are in your garage and have all the tools... putting this together in the parking lot? Well at least you would have a place to buy the tools you need close by.

In the end, if the border guards ask you any questions about the trailer, how can you declare it as trailer parts if you are towing it as a trailer?

You just tell him/her that you bought parts from multiple stores (which you did) and put it together yourself. It's legally registered in Ontario. Plates and ownership.

I don't know what the border guard would say.

I brought the hf trailer back in a Golf, how small is your car?

Worst case, you could probably recline the front passenger seat and put the big box there.

I have a pickup truck... that's why I said "For someone that doesn't have trunk space"

Put 4 guys in your Golf, then on the way back from a ski trip you want to pick up this trailer...

it should fit in the truck bed??? I thought the idea of having a pickup truck was to carry stuff.

this trailer takes about 4-5 hours to assemble and that's if everything goes smooth. being made in china sometimes you may have issues

You will hate yourself if you try that. Mine sure took more than 5 h to build, including needing a drill to enlarge the hole for the tongue pin among other minor mods just to make it work. It might look simple but there are a zillion nuts and bolts and many frame pieces. Trying to do this in a parking lot is amongst the dumbest ideas ever...

Took me pretty much a whole day to build mine taking into account trips to home depot for the wood and whatnot. The chances of needing extra tools to massage the pieces together is highly likely.

Other than the fenders flying off (common problem) and a faulty axle out of the box mine has worked pretty well.

Bearings need proper cleaning and grease. Mine had been fine so far on originals. Not something I would do in the parking lot either.

So no one can actually answer the question I guess.

Canada Customs won't care what you did to it while you were in the US, all they care is what you have with you at the border. If you show up with a box full of trailer parts, you're importing trailer parts. If you show up towing a complete trailer behind your car, you're importing a trailer.

Silly question.

how is it silly? it's legally plated and you have a legal Ontario ownership to match.

It would seem that no one here has attempted what you are suggesting, so the best any of us can do is speculate.

So go ahead and give it a try, be a pioneer and let us know how it works out. I think I will be picking up one of these trailers with my car and building it at my own leisure in my garage.

Nah, I'm probably going this weekend with my truck. I was just wondering.
