Hey everyone, I've got a wall of text for you (and some questions)

There are books available as well like twist of the wrist and others. That could serve as a good primer before venturing out onto a track for the first time. If money is a limitation, I would skip on the school and just go to a trackday. You won't get the same one-on-one time, but you will observe a lot and possible get some tidbits from the crew running the day and also from the other participants.

Yeah, Ive thought of giving one of those kinds of books a read through as a primer.
I can't wait, I have all my gear and I'm all signed up and paid for :)

I will likely putter around the first day just getting used to riding, and we'll see how much I can manage to progress come race day. I've heard it a lot that simply riding and riding (racing) on a track are two totally different ball games, I am confident the simple riding wont be any issue once I get used to the handlebars and the geometry of the style of the bike, and the racing/pushing it part will come/be taught within the course.. Whatever happens it will be a blast, even if I am dead last

6 weeks to go.. arg! Kinda wishing I signed up for an earlier course haha

Why would you recommend skipping a school environment?

Skipping track school can result in missing out on some very important safety pointers, such as interpreting the marshals' flags, proper entry/exit procedures, what to do when passing/being passed... Some of it may get covered at the meetings before the track session starts, but it wouldn't be easy to remember everything.

Fair enough. He did state he was finance tight and that he was involved in karting at some level, so I assume he has familiarity with the basics of track safety and the flagging system, wouldn't you??

Ah yes, but I know that even within karting, depending on the type of sanctioned event it was (club level, regional, nationals, international), that there are different flagging systems throughout. The basics remain the same, red yellow green checkered, but I know there are a lot of variations on the other types of flags that can occur.

I remember once being thrown a red and yellow checkered flag and wondering "what the hell does that mean" on the track.. Come to think of it I still dont remember, but I pulled off the track just in case..

Either way I'm doin the school, and it will be a blast... They told me of a free track day on the 8th, but I dont think I can make it and I think I would rather have some instruction before I jump out on a bike.

I keep puttin on all the gear and walkin around like the hunch back of notredame in anticipation haha
