I'm 41 and bought a 1998 kawi zx7 recently, and got my M1 license today. Ive called about a half dozen insurance companies and had no luck buying insurance so far. If someone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. I just want some basic liability insurance at a reasonable rate. I intent to take a safety course..but until thats possible I would love to go for a ride. Its starting to hurt just looking at the thing sitting there parked :(. BTW I live in southern Ontario.

What seems the problem - companies not wanting to insure you or are the rates too high?

For some reason td qouted me 2100 for the year and state farm was way cheaper for me. Its always good to shop around. Not many companies want to insure m1 I heard

Motorcycle course 101:
Price everything before you buy a bike including insurance.
Figure out where you are going to store it.

Welcome!!

Aw man that hurts. If you can afford it, see if you can get a 250 for the rest of this season, at least until you've had your M2 for a few months.
In September 2011 I started with a 250 and in March of 2012 I picked up a Virago 1100. My insurance went from $650 per year to $1200 per year. BTW I was 48 at the time with 10+ years clean driving experience.

Im assuming hes not happy with the rate...welcome to motorcycle insurance

I found just one that will but with steeep rates cause Im just starting out and with an m1 and 750 sport bike...I also got a couple no sorry sir's...a few haha's and couple redirects, oh and one inconclusive that broker said he will get back to me monday. but he had a hunch it was due to m1. many wont even insure sport bikes at all. i still have a few I could try..just have to find the right broker. I'm enrolling in a rider course after finishing Ill get an endorsement for my m2. a company told me they will recognize it and contract me as an m2 rider. even though technically I wont be until the waiting period is past. that with the course looks good on your part, makes em smile a little. Ill make out fine. premiums will come down a lot I was told. plus when this bike turns 15 it will be classified different according to insurance companies..= me save more. Why buy a smaller bike and turn out not happy with it before a season even ends..would changing bikes not turn into a big expense?? at least I got something I'll hold onto for a while.

I got a quote before hand, before I bought the bike. it wasnt a legit comp after all. They qouted me 1400 and I thought ok ill work from that and call a few others when the time comes. then started getting all the no's last friday lol.

Even if I dont get rubber on the road this season I'll be in much better shape for next and have some cabbage put away. initially sitting this one out was a pretty harsh pill to swallow after I figured I'd have it plated and be out on it by monday or tuesday lol.

Unfortunately the insurer's can quote whatever they want and then change the numbers once they have to write the policy.

I'll be plated and riding in a couple days :headbang:. I'm looking at big rate but it's gotta be whats its gotta be if I want to ride so.

How much is a "big rate". I'm 50 have my M2 for 2 years ride a 1100 Virago and complete coverage is $1200
Ya gotta pay to play :)

Yes they were one. These are a few others..I misplaced my first list sorry

Allstate
Southerland
JD Smith
Rider's Plus
Canadian
State Farm

"Not many companies want to insure m1 I heard"

I gathered that it mostly depends on the bike, which makes sense. M1 holders with a smaller and non sport bike should not have any problem getting signed on with most that do bike insurance. Providing they don't have a sketchy record.

I'm still wondering what relevance the bike turning 15 has. If anyone knows let me know. One broker told me I'll get a bit of a break when it turns 15.."you missed it by a year". I questioned other brokers and they had'nt heard of it before. Also my friend was mistaken. He has a 9 those are seen as sport tour..it had nothing to do with the age of his bike.

I was with DGI, (Desjardin last year when I was M1, (I stupidly let my M licence lapse, when I stopped riding 20 years ago). I was paying $550 for a suzuki 750 Intruder, (definitely not a sport bike). This year I moved up to Yamaha 1700 I am stuck paying $3200 for this year but I will take the test in Oct to finally move to a full M so nest year, (renews in Feb) should be MUCH better.

When is our government going to start regulating what size machine you can have vs. Your experience? I'm sick of them letting the insurance company's do it.

This is my signature

State Farm should be around $1800-$2000/year for you with your M1 (If you have a decent record and have had your G license for 5 years.
It would also go down 40 percent; if you brought your car insurance to them as well.

Do you have tickets, claims or accidents on your record?
How long have you had your G license?
Where do you live?

Its very hard to help when your posts are so vague.
