I dropped in for a feed at my local fave steakhouse on Friday, $69 for a Kansas strip loin caught me by surprise.

Before covid that was $29.
That isn't inflation it's an explosion.

I have price hurdles I hate crossing in that a burger combo works its way up to $9.99 but they want to be able to say "Under $10". Eventually there is no choice and the next price work up is to the next easy number to be under.

Going from $29 to $69 throws me. Did all of their costs go up 240% or are they so behind the eight ball they figure they have nothing to lose.

Or have people become so Covid drunk that they've said WTH to everything.

I will go to a steakhouse if its on corporate money, or I'm traveling somewhere interesting and steak is a thing ( Argentina) , but I'm not going out in my home town for steak. I can order in my favorite 1 3/4-2 in rib steaks , AAA or prime from my go to reliable butcher and have an amazing pc of meat for $25-30 a steak. If you have a grill and a penis ( yes grilling is a manly art) you can make as good a steak as you will ever pay for in a steak house.

That said , I cannot for the life of me recreate deep fried wings at home , I have a small deep fryer but it only does about 8-10 at a time, you have to pay attention and peanut oil refills cost a fortune. I will haunt all the wing places that have half price monday or thursday and rotate my business.
Going from .10cents to .50cents to .85 and now with a pound of wings consisting of 8-10 pc and costing $16.99 , almost $2 ea?? there is no value beyond comaraderie in going out for wings.

I paid $5,50 for a pint of house lager ( black swan) last night and thought that was a deal. Missus said the fridge full of tins in the icebox at home cost $1.85 ea. She's not welcome on the next trip to the pub......

Try vegetable or canola oil.
Or, if you want the best wings........use your fav spices (avoid salt......not for health, for cooking reasons.....salt later if desired)
Pre heat oven to at least 450°F.
Put wings on a rack, not a pan.
30-40 min.

I deep fry them till they float to the top, toss them in the sauce and then bbq till crispy.

Nope , the anchor bar original has jumped the shark .

Has? It had jumped the shark the last time I was there. I was riding my RD350LC, so we're talking 88-89.

If you do cook your own wings at home, the best place I've ever come across to buy wings (raw wings; mix of flats & drums) is Big Red Market in Thorold. If you're ever out that way, have a look. Reasonably priced and the most meaty wings I've even come across. I split them up into meal servings then vacuum seal &freeze them. Big Reds lightly smoked bacon is very good too and reasonably priced!

Small world. My cousin's son is the manager. Mmmm where can I get bacon wrapped wings?

Nope , the anchor bar original has jumped the shark . Group ride to Ivy Arms , main st Milton . Best wings in Ontario, in CDN dollars and trust me , I eat a lot of wings .

Agree. You go to the Anchor Bar for the novelty/touristy factor only.

Interesting takes. I've been going since forever, and it hasn't changed at all to me. I go there for the Dr. Pepper and Buffalo sauce. You guys must be ordering BBQ sauce or something, because I haven't found anywhere in Toronto that compares. Jawny Bakers used to be really close, but their wings were tiny and they didn't always come out crispy.

Pre pandemic we would go to Captains Cove in Buffalo, have a none drinking friend that would drive us over and back. I think the wings were better ( or as good as any in Buffalo) and just stupidly cheap.
Canadian restaurant pricing has gotten silly in the last 6 months.

Had wings last night as Palermo Pub, medium unbattered, grill finish , pretty tasty. My date had battered, 40creek extra saucy. Swimming in sauce which is not my thing but they were happy . Tuesdays are buy one pound, get second half price.
However any day there you can buy 2 pounds, for the same price as buy one pound and get second pound half price. Think they hope no customers can do arithmetic

Use to drink in a dive called The Captain's Cove on Ontario in NFNY. Never knew there was one in Buffalo.

Always on the lookout for good wings.

I have always enjoyed:
- sloppy Joes - monster mofos
- Albatross Pub - delicious with their house sauce
- Boston Pizza - small but flavourful
- Erin Mills Pump and Patio - 40Creek is awesome

But pricing has jumped recently. Hell even had a McDondals treat for 3 adults recently and it came out to $50!

Is the Albatros open again? We picked up a few take outs during shutdown and their $40 + tax deals kept the two of us fed for a couple of days.

Yes they're open again from what I saw. We haven't been back in a while just waiting to find a Saturday that's not busy.

It's silly they've kept it closed on Sundays though...that's frustrating.

But as for the food....eat like a king for minimal money. But I haven't checked updated pricing post-COVID.

I just checked their website and they don't list the packages. I think the packages were a great idea for the partial lockdown as they provided good value for the customer and a streamlined inventory for the pub.

Dammit. I had one poached egg on toast for breakfast and now you've got me looking at pictures of wings, schnitzel, pierogi. Drool.

Fried pierogi with sour cream. The breakfast of champions. (A little bacon on top doesn't hurt either)

Yes, you're right. Those packages were take-out packages during the COVID lockdown. So they won't be available.

However...they're platter for 2-3 is huge.

I don't know the price of peanut oil but one can fry in a very small amount of oil if the batches are small. I wish I could set up our kitchen to do tapas and slowly eat little nibbles of different things while enjoying the company however with just the two of us it's hard to justify the multiple clean ups and varied inventory.

With the cost of eating out, having to chuck out a liter of cooking oil isn't all that bad when you compare it to the price of an order of fries. Potatoes are relatively cheap.

IIRC the Anchor Bar started making wings as a way of using up unwanted parts of the bird and now wings are so desired there are fake boneless ones. I vaguely recall a motorcycle stuck to the wall at the Anchor but it's been a while.
