Before you buy anything make sure to get an insurance quote for it. The 250 Ninja is one of the cheapest to insure which is why it is a popular 1st bike.
I can appreciate you not wanting to be buying and selling but you will be shocked at what the 1000 or even 600 costs especially for a new rider with an M1. The insurance can run as much as the cost of the bike.:roll:
Thank you all for the warm welcome. I found a bike and made a deal. Can you all please provide insight as to if this is a good deal I am getting?
Before I provide details, yes this is a 1000cc bike, I am aware of this and I will have patience and be responsible with it. In my opinion, I don't want to work my way up to a heavy bike bc of buying and selling hassles. Thanks for understanding.
Details:
2003 Yamaha YZF R1
30,000 km
Excellent condition
what do you folks feel is a reasonable price for this?
Welcome to GTAM!! Insurance rates tend to drop significantly after the first year so I would also recommend sticking to the under 600cc bikes - at least for the 1st year. Please call around and definetly check with State Farm before you get the R1.
Do you understand why it's 3800 a year? For all those who are curious as to insurance pricing on a 1000cc...I got my quote. 3800 per year with State Farm. This is for a 21 year old with a clean driving record and a G class license for over 5 years. Quite a buzz kill.
For those of you who are encouraging a 250 bike (Ninja), the reason why I have not been interested is because its small. I want a bike that has some size to it, it's not to impress people as somebody stated, it's my personal preference. I'll be looking for a more insurance friendly bike now, i'm open to suggestions
Right now the only 250 bike I like is the Hyosung, problem is i'll have to buy brand new since it's almost impossible to find a used one. Not too mention that bike is super good on insurance, 80/month!
P.S. State farm rates stay the same until you are 25. Regardless of M class license.

why exactly do you want the hyosung? It looks nice but... well I don't know much about this years model but a friend of mine who had the 08 had the frame crack after the first year... mind you he got a new one when he went to the dealership but still thats some scary stuff.
ninja 250 is solid. if you're looking for a little more "size" why not look for a 2 strike 125? I started off with a aprilia rs125. it looked big, it had tons of power (since it's two stroke) and it was really fun learning on. it is a lot more maintenance tho.
Yes absolutely I do. I'm thinking Hyosung since the 2012's look great and more importantly have a bigger body..not typical of a 250cc engine. Yes the ninja is a great bike, but its size is not appealing to me, regardless of whether or not it is a great starter bike. Its tires have no size to them. Some may comment that this is a stupid reason, but to me the entire purpose of riding is to have a motorcycle that you are content with. Hyosungs look close to a 600cc bike.
Also, since I'm with State Farm, my rates are going to stay constant until im 25 (i'm 21 now). Therefore I'm not interested in having a ninja 250 or equivalent for a year or so and then upgrade.
I'll look into the bike you mentioned, any other suggestions by anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Have you ridden on any bike before? I think you're worrying too much what others think. I could be wrong but just from what you're using as justification (Tire size, "Hyosungs look close to 600cc). The most important aspect to riding a bike is you being comfortable on it. Also, it's not such a pain in the butt to sell a bike, it's actually quite a simple and easy process (assuming you have a bike in demand). Additionally, if you get a hyosung, it will be very difficult to sell.
You could also look into a CBR 600 f4i. Of the sport bikes, it's a little more forgiving (higher handlebars, easy to maneuver, less power on the low end rpm). Personally, I don't recommend it but than again, I don't know you very well...
My recommendation would be as follows:
1) Ninja 250
2) Aprilia rs125 (amazing bike but 2 stroke, expensive and hard to find in toronto)
3) CBR 250 (wow beautiful bike)
4) Yamaha virago 250 (not sportbike looking but so much fun to ride!! I'll be done building mine in a few months if you're interested)
5) Ninja 400 (came out last year i believe and i think was built for people like you)
6) GS500 (almost everyone has owned one at one point of their lives)
7) Ninja 500 (not sure if it's called this but i've heard a lot of good things)
8) SV650 (i call this one the work horse, you can do anything you want to it and it'll still run)
9) Kawasaki ER6N (sooooo sexy)
10) CBR 600 F4i (i owned one before, my second favourite bike and one of the most comfortable i've ever ridden on, my girlfriend loved it because of the banana seat)
Before you purchase anything, if you haven't already, go ride on a few bikes. If you start with a higher cc bike, it will be harder to learn (and much more expensive). As you'll most likely hear, there are two types of riders, those who have fallen and those who will fall...
Or buy two Ninja 250's for the cost of insuring one 1000.:dontknow: Tough calljust do what i did. Buy the bike first then try to find insurance... (CBR 1000RR)
