Have you imported a US 2008+ Ducati

I've recently seen the love of my life, a fully upgraded 2008 848 that captures all my dreams and makes me drool. The only problem is that its under US title, the bike is currently in Ontario so all I'd have to do is the paperwork to make it a canadian vehicle. It's not that complicated except for the fact that you need a recall history for the vehicle and Ducati of north america has told me the don't issue you these for 2008+ vehicles. If anyone has gone through this before please let me know how you managed to do it as I want my baby!!!

Do u have the form 1 and 2 from RIV? Proof of taxes paid at the boarder? Get the inspection done at Canadian tire and then go to service Ontario. All done.

Aye, but that doesn't account for the "recall clearance certificate" that is absolutely and without question legally required in order to complete the process, and which Ducati apparently won't issue. Apparently there are some car manufacturers that do the same thing. I'd phone RIV and ask them about it.

Try going to a Ducati dealer and offering them some $$ to print it out.

Exactly, its the Recall Notice or Campaign List as Ducati calls it that is the sticking point. I have called RIV and they didn't understand it, they said others have imported newer Ducs but they weren't sure what they gave for the Recall part. I've tried Apex and they had no idea, Pennisula is going to get back to me and last I have to call GP back on Monday to speak with the service manager. One Friday after speaking to Ducati North America I thought all hope was lost, but after speaking with Pennisula and GP there might be a glimmer of hope.

How about calling a US dealership and getting them to print it out and send it over for a fee?

To please the US the vehicle should be legally exported. That has become more difficult as the exporter needs a US ID number. You don't need it for Canadian purposes but there could be some flak taking the bike back to the USA.

Good luck and hopefully you can get ahold of the recall list. Just a heads up, alot of Ducati headlights have the tendency to fog up when there's cool moisture in the air. They have denied my claim 3 times for my 2013 848evo Corse citing that alot of their bikes have that issue and they do not cover it under warranty. The customer service department really isn't any help at all. NA Ducati manager contacted me regarding the issue and all I got was attitude from him stating even his Ford pickup truck has the same issue. I argue that my 2004 Acura TL I had back in '06 had the same issue which the dealership replaced after an inspection. He goes on to say alot of their headlights has similar issue and even if they replaced it, there's a big chance it'll happen again. So now I'm stuck with foggy headlights when the temperature drops to around 18-20 degrees.

Kawasaki USA faxed me a recall letter for a bike I imported. Try Ducati USA

Thanks for the tip TorontoGSX, I won't know until its too late as this bike was bought for a collection so it only has 990km on it. At least I know what I can look forward too :s

Kellen, DNA are the ones that told me they won't issue the notice for a bike 08 or newer.

I'm starting to think if I should forget it all. I went to see a 2010 R1 which would be a little cheaper and such an easier deal. Things that make ya go hmmmm.

Done this once. Dealers usually charge for the recall letter, which they will request through their head office on your behalf. There is a way around this though. RIV will accept a service history printout as an equivalent of the recall letter, but it must be complete and up to date. This one can be obtained from a dealer's service manager. Chances are you will have to try this with a US dealer, since Canadian dealerships don't have access to the US database.

On a side note, RIV does check on 'authenticity' of the documents submitted to them.
Good luck!

what is this "recall letter" i always hear about? what is actually on this letter?

The one I got was from the Yamaha dealer directly (no Yamaha USA head office). It was just a computer printout showing there were no recalls for my scooter (identified by its VIN).

I could go home and try to find that paper, scan it or take a pic of it, upload the image, and post it here for your enjoyment, but I am feeling too lazy, and it is just a plain printout, if I remember correctly, from Internet Explorer, showing that through the browser in the computer, the dealer accessed Yamaha's internal network through its web interface, and went to the recall section, did a search on the scooter, showed negative, and then he sent the page to the printer. The paper itself is nothing special. But it is a requisite to bring the bike over. The objective is that no bike with outstanding recalls can come to Canada. I guess the goverment wants to keep us safe.

Any dealer can do that. I would try the dealer first.

try to get the previous owner to get it for you, few years ago, I imported the Honda s2000 and RIV doesn't need the recall letter,
they know that Honda USA wont issue the letter to importer, maybe it's the same with Ducati :D

Recall clearance is mandatory these days for all vehicles, unless DOM is older than 15 years.
The Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) will not release the inspection form for your vehicle until confirmation that there are no outstanding recalls, has been received.

Try this:
10443 Bandley Drive
Cupertino, CA, US, 95014

Phone #: 408 253-0499
Fax #: 408 253-4099
Web site address:
www.ducatiusa.com

The point is to make it as difficult as possible to cross border shop for motorcycles and luxury cars, as we pay much more for these in Canada for no good reasons (except greed).

Don't drop a dime on the bike until you know 110% that you have ALL the required paperwork to do the import process. You can set yourself up for a giant headache on a deal such as this.. I'd be weary of it personally. Someone went through the trouble of bringing in this Ducati but didn't do the paperwork? F that.

And if thats the listing Im seeing on Kijiji... you're about to drop $11k+ on a 6 year old 848. Uh. Okay.

So heres the most recent update, GP Bikes was nice enough to pull up the vin in their system and send me a screenshot. I have already submitted this to RIV and the accepted it and started my case, so it looks like its all going through. The whole process will still take a while before completion but at least I now know it's just a waiting game.
