Has the Naked bike killed the Super Sport?

I read somewhere KTM canceled the RC8 because they didn’t feel it was right to build street legal race bikes. Yet then proceeded to build a 1301cc super naked with 180hp WTF

I wonder how long until insurance premiums catch up with nakeds?
some of the manus are really pushing it to the limit

how this bike remains affordable to insure baffles me

Yeah I would make space in my garage for one of these, and smile while my wife yells at me.

I’m thoroughly enjoying my 2015 KTM 1190 adventure.
I mostly stick to street but will take the odd day to hit mostly back roads and rail trails. Hardly ever use my aluminum tool box panniers. Just a hard ktm power parts top box That looks like a black and orange turtle up there.
It’s not an attractive sexy bike that stirs my soul visually but it does make me smile.

Nice bike, locked at them and the GS when I was shopping

That is decent looking. Kinda like a jacked up tuono.
I’ve never seen one in person ever. They must be fairly rare?

Modern literbikes have enough torque down low and when they get up to the higher revs, they will make you crap your pants and cream your pants at the same time.
MT09 makes you crap your pants off the line :devilish:

See when selling the Harley I was also faced with the wife.
She really didn’t like the sport bike idea and nakeds to her we’re still sport bikes.
was very hard to get a green light on a super naked 1290cc bike referred to as the Beast. So I compromised further still and bought a big dirt bike thingy with tool boxes on the side ? and my insurance was almost halved. Another win for adventure bikes. But I still fantasize about the beast....
Nakeds are certainly more akin to super sports with the plastic pulled off, better ergos and more down low grunt.

wait until the people swap to it and the claims start to come in.

if it makes you feel better i was getting quoted just below SS prices on the Tuono (didnt shop insurance much) but they wanted only $20 more a month then my MT09 for the MT10..../boggle

And will adventure bikes eventually take over everything ?

I hope not; the 2000 km that I put on a BMW F800GS was more than enough; for the type of riding I do, I thought it was awful. No issue with a naked bike. Facebook is reminding me that it's 2 years since flogging a rental F800R in Tuscany...

The Adventure market is such a strange place.
Originally I would have said with it was the crossover point of dirt and touring
With dual sport being the cross over of dirt and sport.
And Sport touring blurring the line between Sport and well touring as the name would indicate. But I definitely seems Adventure is a wide category.
Bikes like the S1000XR, The Multistrada, and the Capo seem to sit somewhere closer to being a naked sport touring.
Where the KTM Adventure and BMW GS would seem to be more the dirt touring hybrid. This opinion maybe based entirely on the look or the perception.

Please elaborate ? share
What didn’t you like about the F800GS? Was it under powered? Bad ergo?
What type of ridding did you ask of the bike?

Likely thought they were buying a BMW and it turned out to be a Rotax.

More low down grunt  so if I pull the fairings off my bikes?

ADV segment is all about marketing.BMW started it by celebrating their P/D victory with a gs replica. A standard bike (naked) with a little windshield and high front fender. Throw in a catalog of almost offroad worthy accessories, and off to the bank ya go.

When I rode the R6 it was just disappointment. It was only enjoyable going way faster than I should.
When I ride the MT09 I love how light flickable it is, the low down power is adequate. Over all very good experience that can last most of a day trip.
My 1190 Adventure has all the power I could ever need, and more.
I've never found myself thinking this needs more power. It’s more plush and comfy than the MT09, and has more wind protection. It can rail the twisties faster than I will. It’s just a little slow on the nimble feeling that the MT09 does so well.

Seems to be a race to build a 2 wheeled SUV, something that’s perfect in every way, but despite both ends of the spectrum have two wheels dirt bikes and street bike are too far apart. Going back to the OP I have tried to explain the benefits to my son of having a Naked over a SS, where we are different is he wants a bike to Say look at me, I want a bike to say you can’t find me, I guess I was the same 27 years ago.

That makes it sound like a lot of smoke and mirrors. Like every adventure rider thinks they are the next PD racer or world traveler like Ewen and Charlie. Although my skills are not yet we’re I want them. I’m using my bike for all intended purposes.
I will ride dirt trails, hwy, back roads, twisties, cruise or spirited speeds all in one ride. I don’t want a bike that is purpose built I want one bike capable of what ever I come across. So far the limiting factor has been rider in every segment I have thrown at the bike.
But do admit the Adventure segment is very wide range of bike that are far apart in there actual intended purpose.

Pavement riding in Australia, from Sydney to Melbourne via country roads. Too high, too soft, too vague, inadequate cornering clearance despite being so high because of the comically soft suspension. Our group were all sport riders and all on various adventure bikes because that's all the rental agency had. We all had the same complaints. The question came up, "if this was a car, what would it be" and the consensus was that it's a Ford Explorer. It's not good at anything.

Fully faired bikes are quicker to wash and wax so you can get to a parking lot really fast to talk about how fast you ran through the forks. ?jk
