Has commuting on your bike, reduced your passion for riding?

I started commuting to work regularly (as in every day during riding season) about three years ago, been riding about 10 years. I used to look forward to getting home and often I'd go for a scoot in the evening, and always on the weekend. Three things have happened since I started commuting; I don't go for weekend rides as often, I rarely go for a ride during weekday evenings, and I also see my bike as much more of a vehicle than a cool plaything like I used to.

I'm wondering if those of you who commute regularly found yourself in the same position?

No, but I've only been riding for a year :0....

However, not sure if this applies, I had a similar feeling when I was learning to drive manual. I looked forward to every drive but after a few years of doing it I kinda just got... bored?

To be honest I hope what you say never happens to me with my bike. Maybe making an effort to hit the track or ride along with friends might help you. Of course I'm not sure if you already do this but personally I find riding with others, even complete stringers, to be pretty damn enjoyable.

I found commuting on a 1986 concours 1000 to be such a tiring lifeless affair that I needed a change as well. I decided to pickup a CBR1100XX black bird, a bike so quick (in my mind) that its entirely wasted commuting down the QEW. I get to ride the bike everyday, but I only get to appreciate it when I go out on those evening / weekend rips.

Nope - The more i ride the more i want to ride.

Been riding a hell of a lot longer than 10 years

Increased!

Nasty 49 over tickets which are actually a merciful plea have reduced my passion for riding anywhere near the capabilities of a rider or bike. Downtown traffic is challenge and test of skill every second.

The track fills the void the "twisties" outside of town simply cannot.

I rode my bike as my only vehicle, all yr round, for 4 yrs.......87,000 kms on a cbr600....snow, sleet, ice, heat...didn't matter.

It killed my desire to ride a bike anywhere mundane. I don't do short rides. I don't do boring rides. If I can't ride someplace fun, new, exciting, twisty, deserted, mysterious, then I would prefer to take a cage instead.

When I suit up for riding a streetbike, I ride no less than 8-12 hrs......but prefer to make it at least a weekend, or even better, a week. This also means that sometimes I only ride two or three times a year, but those rides can be 5-6000 km rides.

Maybe it's time for you to get a more exciting bike.

I dont commute on my bike, have a car for that. So when i do get out on the bike its actually fun and not in rush hour with idiots to every side of me

I tend to commute on TTC and ride on the weekends. Whenever I commute on the bike I end up taking longer to get my stuff packed, gear on, bike ready, traffic, gear off, etc. Much more fun to save it and only ride when you've got at least a day to go out and have fun.

I do feel exactly how you do.. riding is getting boring.. I need to go to the track

No! Commute 120+ kms round trip daily in most weather. I don't really go out just to ride anymore , but I have no problem going 20km to pick up milk even though there's a supermarket and 2 convenience stores within 2 blocks of my house.

A bad day riding is still better than a good day driving

Every time I get out of the house on a bad weather day (i.e 0c) thinking I will get in the car, I look at both the car and the bike and end up riding lol

Although, I gota say, its a whole diff sensation on my next ride, if I couldnt ride for a few days but again, it doesnt make the commjte any less FUN =)

I used to ride to work all the time but find myself doing less so this season.
It has become more of an evening/weekend/2 up thing.
Would never give up riding but I'm thinking of upgrading to something a little more street friendly.

Do you really wanna ride your bike on the weekend when you ride it every day from Monday to Friday? I don't think so.
I don't but he does, so either start commuting with the car or get a new bike every couple of years to spice things up. Or get a commuter bike and a separate weekender.

The bike would just turn into my summer vehicle. Unless I was hauling children, I used the bike for everything. I still managed a couple of bike trips a year, but not so much weekend or week night group rides.

When I was working in TO I would commute on the bike as much as possible. Using the bike made my commute much more bearable, cost far less in gas and also allowed for free parking near my office. What's not to like about that? My commute was 160km round trip so fuel savings compared to my truck were substantial. On my way home, if I was on Highway 10, I would always include The Forks. Some days I took different routes back to Orangeville, and on more than one occasion I travelled through Collingwood on my homeward trip. That would pretty much eat up the gas savings for the week. I still commute on the bike, but it is quite a bit closer now and involves Hockley Valley Road on my way over to the golf course. Why would I drive on that road when I can ride?

I can see why. I've been telling myself everyday "I will not speed". On my GS500 I used to over the limit a wee bit. On the gixxer everything just seems so slow. I've been debating on buying a **** box for commute use because getting an race/stunt charge is too likely on this bike =/

With regards to the topic: old (slow) bike, no. New (fast) bike, yes.
