Has anyone else "given up" commuting on their motorcycle?

I live in Oshawa, my pseudo in-laws live in Brooklin (North Whitby).

The commute is south to the GO Train. Or you can drive and be in traffic all the way.

Everyone takes the train if they're coming back without additional stops.

My in-laws live in Brooklin. I can't imagine the type of route you take to get to downtown. I'm guessing a route (not dvp) to 407? With traffic and all, i'm guessing it's close to almost 2 hours one way.
various choices, best one is:

Side scenic roads all the way to Brock, 407, 404 to 401 and then Yonge street down, or 404 exit on Finch and down on the HOV to Sheppard and then Bayview etc.

With traffic on a bad day 1:15 min, with regular traffic the fastest is 50 min.

When I drive once it snows I go down to 401 taking lakeridge and when the cluster **** begins at Morningside, I take a secret side road to McCowen and jump back on the 401 to yonge.

I am in Yonge and Eglinton so it helps to know the traffic at different times of the day and the different short cuts for those days when it rains or there is an accident.

My problem with the train is:
a) I hate public transportation
b) I would also have to take the subway to Y&E
c) I enjoy riding to work and home since it allows me to unwind

It's 20 minutes from Brooklin to the Whitby Go station, add 10 minutes to find a parking spot and then the 50 minute commute time that is if you are taking the express in the morning. So now you are at Union Station and you have to walk to your workplace, hopefully it's close by.

Even on a rainy day with heavy traffic, the bike is faster and cheaper and i'm not sitting(providing i get a seat) next to anyone annoying who smells plus i can park anywhere downtown for free.

An average day is about an hour by bike.

Rode to school today because no ride to bus station....

I ended up taking LONGER than the bus due to ramp detours. Efficient my ***! :D

To you Brooklin-ites,

Do you take the DVP back up after work? I work 8-4 and work at the heart of downtown and don't even dare take it going home. It is a major PITA going to Eglinton, let alone all the way to the 401. Do you guys have an alternative route home home?

Then take 401 to meadowvale, up to plug hat to tauton, make first left to york/Durhamn line to either 7 or the 407 (if you flip your plate)

Then I go concession road 7 all the way to Ridgeroad and from there south to Columbus. Jay takes 7, i think that is crazy at least until the expansion is over, is currently a 60km/hr

Bayview extension, then join up with Don Mills HOV lanes.
You can also take Jarvis to Mt Pleasant Rd up to bayview and 401 but bayview extension is probably faster

what bike you ride as a student?

how much insurance do you pay if you dont mind me ask? I am guessing 3500?

$1700 with Statefarm (only bike, nothing else).

I'm 26, a very old student. :(

i gave up commuting on the bike a while ago ... i gave up commuting on the bike to the go train station too ... BUT !!! i bought a scooter and now commute to the go train station on the scooter. i fill up once a week and costs me only 3 bucks for 140-150km of commuting per week .. :)

The 401 is a cluster****. The ride from 400 to McCowan is just not fun.
Gonna save my riding for evenings/weekends.

I just take city streets instead. Takes a bit longer but not much since the 401 is so slow.

My bike is almost exclusively for commuting to work for a couple of reasons:

1) I drive a lifted Jeep with 33" tires so my gas mileage sucks ***! Riding my little 250 saves me on gas and wear and tear.
2) I live in the Beach and work near York Mills/Don Mills so I don't have to deal with the downtown core traffic. I take the HOV lane north on Don Mills and I get to work a little sooner. It's usually a nice 30 minute ride.
3) The parking garage at work is 4 levels and your parking level is assigned by seniority but because I ride I get to park on the ground level. People at my office get so bent out of shape if someone who hasn't been at the company as long gets ground floor parking! To that I say "walking your fat *** down some stairs won't kill you" LOL! #firstworldproblems

I commute every day, 400 south to 401, 401 east to yorkdale. I honestly can't imagine commuting in a car, I feel like it would be too infuriating not to be able to fit into small areas and OCCASIONALLY lane split when safe to do so. That being said, the bike is being stored soon for winter. Curse you forces of nature!

Anyways, I'm surprised you find straight line driving so detestable. If you want it to be fun do some SAFE weaving

I'm the opposite now, as I've given up "sport riding" and now mainly commute. Straight lines and city traffic (esp. downtown Toronto) are plenty entertaining enough for me!
