Has anyone else "given up" commuting on their motorcycle?

It takes longer commuting by bike because it makes my 20 km commute into at least 220 kms ride.

I've enlightened people of that fact in the past when they've said "It must be quicker to get to work on the bike".

If you take the direct route :)

Direct route is what google map say, going from point A to B. In my case is faster using 407.

My commute now is 4 hrs by plane vs 2 days by bike, So I'm done commuting.

Riding to work is somehow always worth it, even with the congestion. It's a shame Toronto is too backward to support filtering. Putting on the whole clown outfit is getting a bit annoying though. My average speed is about 11 km/hr during the rush, so it's hard to be concerned about rash (yeah, I know serious accidents are still possible). I think an Aerostitch might be in order, so I don't have to deal with so many garments. Fortunately, I can always take the car if I'm feeling petulant.

Without commuting, it's often hard to find time/energy for a ride and it polishes your low speed skills as well. Traffic jams suck and so do they turkeys that cause it. With the size of the GTA and the not-too-dissimilar neighboring regions, we're not escaping either, so I'd rather learn to calm down and know how to deal with it.

I started riding 3 years ago and after this summer I've chosen to give up commuting with the bike for the following reasons

  • Straight line riding is incredibly boring
  • Rush hour is painful
  • Parking in high foot traffic areas lead to paranoia of the bike being sat on, knocked, over, etc.
    • Bike might get stolen
  • Backpack riding on a SS isn't bad but is restrictive on body position during corners
  • Flat spots on tires occur MUCH faster
  • ...I can't concentrate on work/school/whatever!

I've been riding the bike every night for a good 100km or so alone and still get huge kicks out of it but I have a feeling I'm going to end up "track only" in the future.

Anyone else been in this boat? What were your reasons?

It's never been a consideration for me, coming to King/Bay from Richmond Hill, for these very reasons.

I'd be up for this
Speaking to Lita the other day we need to organize and old f a r t ride before the season is over. Make it so number one. maybe we can drag out some of the old favourites.

Oh for my commute of 12 km each way.... I downsized from a gixxer1000 to a 50CC BWS.. I love it!!

Had a bws when I lived in Toronto, fantastic little bike and tons of fun.

I've been riding to work for two years now and I love it.
I want to ride AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! I love it when I encounter traffic, then I can practice lane filtering, passing traffic and riding slow.

It always wakes me up before work so I start work all EnERGETIC.
During work I have something to look forward to.
At the end of work I sometimes go for a nice ride along the country side roads to de-stress.
I will continue to commute on a bike for the foreseeable future. I love it way too much.

This is how I arrive to work every day :)

Saves me about 20-30 minute to commute downtown instead of TTC every morning. I wish I had a bike with a softer clutch but the the FZR is nimble through traffic and with just enough punch to pull away. I don't ride in rain and I'll wait the traffic out after work.

Try going to the gym once in a while.

If you are not using it as a mean of transportation, it becomes a pretty expensive hobby....

How so?
My car gets better fuel mileage then my bike does!
You still pay yearly insurance on your bike like everyone else yet only use it a few months a year, do you not also have a car?
If your buying a bike to save money your doing something wrong.
Yea a bike is a toy and nothing else.

Yes, I also have a car, (2 actually) but I have friends who are less financially fortunate who does rely on their motorcycle as their primary mode of transport....are you suggesting poor folks shouldn't be riding at all?????

Cuz I really have trouble with your statement saying 'bike is a toy and nothing else' if its just your opinion, that's fine, what ever, but I sense that you are looking down on riders who may not have money, especially with you questioning me whether I have a car or not.

If you can afford to ride, you can afford to buy a car.
