Hamilton done good!

I've heard city worker jokes since I was a kid, ie: driving by a job with one guy working and five standing around watching...or, if you want it easy get a job working for the city. It's been no secret. Odd that they've finally decided to do something about these fogduckers after so long?

I'm glad that they did something about it. This sort of behavior is inexcusable. If you're hired to do a job you should be doing it.

Please let other cities follow this lead and clean house. The Kitchener works dept gasoline "shrinkage" issue should have had dozens fired. Sitting next snowplow operators having wings and beer and heading back out to plow? Toronto city workers with part time jobs at the CNE grounds and on hourly city clock. Fire more, it will inspire the rest.

I wouldn't break out the bubbly yet.

The Union will file greivances with the City.

When i grow up i wanna be a city worker

This is excately why there is so much dislike for unions among the working taxpayers. Caught stealing product, theft of services, complete false reporting , allegedly drinking on the job and being investigated sale of stolen goods.

And the union would file a grievance , I weep....

I'm split when it comes to unions. On the one hand, it breeds an environment where laziness is accepted and there is little motivation to work harder than the next guy. On the other hand, weren't most people better off when unions were much more prominent? Good benefits paid for by the company, RRSP matching, guaranteed raises and overall higher pay.

Companies are in the business of making money, as much of it as possible. Seems more and more lower to mid level employees are making less with fewer perks, while upper management is taking in huge bonuses and companies are making more and more profit.

A rep for the union has already publicly stated they do not support such behaviour. They do have a legal obligation to represent the workers, but more from a stand point of ensuring due process was followed.

This goes much higher than the average union member. There are supervisors and managers involved. I would look at blaming them before anyone else.

I blame all of them. But I still blame the guy that does it first.

Think about that to it's logical conclusion and the company is gone, along with the jobs.
Don't conflate huge bonuses with making profit. Profit is the point. Bonuses come out of profits. Jobs come out of profits.
Unions will suck a company dry and so will management. It's called the Agency Problem; aligning the interests of stakeholders with shareholders.

Looks like that particular union wishes to foster professionalism in their ranks, which is unsurprising. Regardless of what the ongoing media witch hunt wishes for us to believe, most unions are like that. Lazy slobs tend to get sacked or sit on the bench until they leave, while hard workers get the jobs where their skills are properly utilized, along with the decent pay/benefits.

This goes both ways. A corporation's interest is to make as much profit as possible, limiting employee wages and benefits boosts profits. A union's interest is to get the most that they can for their members.

Both entities, left unchecked, will go towards the extreme.

I agree. The problem exists when there is poor management. When the sh$t hits the fan management blames the union. They are always the easy target. I have seen it time and time again. Lazy manager doesn't put in the work to get rid of a problematic employee. The dismisal gets grieved and the grievor wins. Then the union gets blamed for supporting the slacker. Well, that's their job. If management put in the time and followed proper procedures, grievances would not be won and slackers would be turffed.

In this case it looks like the management actually did a fair amount of homework, tracking records and finding just cause to bring in private investigators which distances the managers from the cases.
I have to applaud them for letting the two that said "yes we did it" to take a 30 days suspension. It may be the cap on career advancement but they stay in that lucrative municipal pension plan. The other 29 guys not so smart.

Why does everyone think that this only happens with government organizations. I worked in both private and public sectors and seen good and bad in both of them. I have seen guys in the public sector work there butts off to make sure the snow has been cleared so you can drive home safely, I have seen guys in companies purposely damage equipment so they can go home early. ( non-unionized ) yes it was good that they caught these guys, but what about the guys that are left who actually put in an honest days work. Also, the "lucrative" municipal pension plan is not that lucrative anymore.

Nowadays, with the state that our middle class is in, "lucrative" means you won't have to eat cat food once you get old
