Gun Range/Shooting Ranges recommendations.

I participate in one of the leagues and also can get out early enough to catch a few hours before the leagues start from time to time. Can also stay up late as its a 24hr range. After the juniors are out, entire Saturday is open until 8:30am Sunday. I have taken guests to the club and never had issues finding open ports over the weekends (as RG can attest to lol). While only 20-30 people may show up on each league night, it's not always the same 20-30 people. Your typical member shows up about once a month. I shoot once or twice a week, some may only come in once a year to sight in their hunting rifles, and it averages out. When I needed to sight in a rifle for a competition I was able to stay there until 3am and get it done. The peace of mind is great. Is the club perfect? Of course not. However, I haven't come across a club that is. Outdoor ranges don't let you shoot in the evenings at all due to noise restrictions. In Guelph you have to wait for a year before you can shoot on your own. At Sharon, you need to buy a $3000 share if available. Others have residency requirements... Silverdale is pretty good if you don't mind the drive. I do, but I drop in from time to time.

Burlington sucks.

Most of the directors are crotchety old safety Nazis that have nothing better to do with their lives.

Every day of the week, there is a league shoot, conveniently scheduled from 6-10/10:30pm.
Saturday mornings are for juniors, and Sunday nights are PPC.
Monday and Thursday morning, closed for cleaning.
Closed all day Tuesday for IPSC setup.
One weekend a month, closed for safety courses.

If you work shifts, and/or like shooting at 3:00am on a Monday, you'll love it. If you're a normal person with a job, the hours suck. 1600+ members pay dues to keep the place open for the leagues that have *maybe* twenty people a night shooting.

Join here only as a last resort.

I was considering it because I normally work the afternoon shift... so during the day prior to 2 or after 11pm would be good, but what killed it for me is only having a 50 meter range. I think I would get bored too fast.

Backyard. My own rules and a lot further distances than any club around.

Invite me over to shoot... I 'll bring the guns, ammo, and beer (for after).

There's plenty to challenge you even at that distance.. Try to put together a good group offhand. Or get yourself a restricted, whether it's an Austrian plastic ****doll or a Czech hunk of steel, even 20 will be challenging. I've been going to that club for a couple of years and I can find PLENTY to make me sweat. On Wednesdays, we do something like a bowling league with rifles, come out and check it out. Let me know which Wednesday and I'll clear it with the director, shouldn't be an issue. If you don't have eyes and ears, let me know and I'll bring a spare set for you.

They also started organizing black gun shoots, CQB-style or plain action style, but you need an action shooting cert for that, whether it's black badge or club-level ppc or club-level action range safety course.

I'd be in too please.. I'll bring more ammo and some dead animal flesh to throw on hot iron :D

I would certainly take you up on that offer, and would seriously consider the Burlington Range if I didn't normally work the afternoon shift; but I will be stuck on the afternoon shift for the foreseeable future.

Any Durham or farther east quality options? Haven't heard great things about the shwa, but open to all opinions. Peterborough? Lindsay?

Silverdale would get my vote. Very nice place, all the staff are very nice and professional. I've been there as a guest a few times.

That actually makes Burlington appealing. They have organized shoots on most evenings and the range would be free when you're not working.

That would make it appealing if they had more than just the 50m.

If I could join the league shoots, then I wouldn't get bored because my activity would be varied.
If I had more options than the 50m then my activities would also be varied.

Last time I went to Silverdale, I spent most of the day at the 50 yard to sight in my rifles. Once I got them all sighted in with good groupings I didn't know what else to do as they were all shooting where I wanted them to. I moved to the 100 yard range after that for another couple hours -- at Burlington I wouldn't have had that option.

What shooting stance options can you do at Burlington? One limitation I find with Silverdale is that most of your rifle shooting will be from a bench. You can stand up to shoot, but as far as I know there is nowhere to kneel and shoot, go prone, or practice with a shooting stick -- all of which are important to practice prior to taking a rifle out hunting.

Burlington's ports are modular.. You just take off the bench top and you can do sitting (ok a little narrow for that but doable), kneeling and prone. The rifle league is challenging beause it's all offhand. Some of the guys are REAL good.

I've checked out

- targetsportscanada.com, membership is approximately $700/yr, read reviews on it, usually busy, recommended to come early and book 3 weeks in advance.
- Burlington, membership was $385/yr, pros is that it's open 24 hours.

Are there anymore ranges out there that any of you would recommend?

A bit late to this party, but you can take a look at this place

http://www.dnpaha.org/dnphahome.html

it's a drive, but for me it's well worth it, especially if you want to do more than just shoot...

you also have the pistol range at Lakeshore and Dixie area

.

The bunker is open once every 4th blue moon if the stars will it and the groundhog stays in the house, plus you can't shoot anything rifle-caliber there. I might check it out but I doubt I'll ever become a member even though I could reasonably walk there.

The one in O-ville might be interesting. How far out does the rifle range go?

That one looks interesting, but their website offers very little information.

Do you happen to know what length of ranges they have and/or what the yearly membership fees are?

2 trap houses (5 stand)

1 rifle range indoor (partially, the room your in is indoor, the targets are outdoor) there is 25 yard, 50 yard, and 100 yard, plus portable stands for pistol shooting so you can have it at 3 yards and further.

2 Lane archery
plus a 3d archery trail in the woods...

2 stocked ponds for fishing

camping, and lots of land to just walk around if you wish

I don't have the current costs, but it's roughly 300 give or take and that is for a family of 4

next meeting is Nov 7 for members, potential members and guests

If I have time and remember when I get home, I will look up the exact costs if you need them...
